The area we cover
A compact, busy city with acute, specialist and community nursing work packed into a small area.
Bristol’s hospital scene changed on 1 July 2026, when North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust merged to form Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, now one of the largest NHS trusts in the country. Its Southmead Hospital, in the north of the city, runs the Brunel building and the adult major trauma centre for the Severn Major Trauma Network, taking the most serious injuries from right across the South West. In the city centre sit the Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Bristol Heart Institute and the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, alongside the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, the only paediatric major trauma centre in the South West. St Michael’s Hospital covers maternity and neonatal care, and the trust also runs Weston General Hospital over in Weston-super-Mare. For a fairly small, dense city, that puts acute, specialist and tertiary work close together.
Mental health across the city is led by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, one of the largest specialist mental health, learning disability and autism providers in the South West. Its acute and psychiatric intensive care wards sit at Callington Road Hospital in Brislington, while Fromeside, the medium secure forensic unit at Blackberry Hill Hospital in Fishponds, cares for people with more complex risk. HMP Bristol, the Category B local prison in Horfield, runs an inpatient healthcare unit with round-the-clock nursing cover. On the independent side, Spire Bristol Hospital and Nuffield Health’s Bristol Hospital, The Chesterfield, in Clifton, keep elective theatres and day-case lists busy. Add the district nursing teams and dozens of CQC-registered care and nursing homes across the city, and there is nursing work in nearly every setting.

Specialisms in Bristol
From the acute wards of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust to secure forensic care at Fromeside, whatever your speciality there is likely to be Bristol work for you.
Bristol is a young city overall, but the 2021 census still counted 60,760 residents aged 65 and over, nearly 28,000 of them 75 or older, and that keeps demand for nursing-home care steady. The city has dozens of CQC-registered care and nursing homes, and Bristol City Council’s adult social care was rated ‘Good’ by the CQC in 2025. We place nurses into residential, nursing and dementia care across areas like Westbury-on-Trym, Knowle and Henbury.

Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust leads mental health here, with acute wards and psychiatric intensive care at Callington Road Hospital in Brislington and forensic care at the Fromeside medium secure unit at Blackberry Hill Hospital in Fishponds. We cover RMN and mental health nursing shifts across these and other community settings.

HMP Bristol is the city’s Category B local prison, in Horfield on Cambridge Road. It runs an inpatient healthcare unit with 24-hour nursing cover and a long-established drug and alcohol treatment service, so there is genuine prison and secure-setting nursing work on the doorstep for nurses who want it.

Southmead Hospital’s Brunel building holds the adult major trauma centre for the Severn Major Trauma Network, complete with helipad, taking the most serious injuries from across the South West. The Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, the region’s only paediatric major trauma centre, add adult and children’s critical care, so there is real scope for ITU, HDU and critical-care nurses.

Theatre nurses have plenty of choice here. NHS surgical work runs at Southmead and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, while the independent sector adds Spire Bristol Hospital and Nuffield Health’s Bristol Hospital, The Chesterfield, in Clifton, which runs three digital theatres. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery shifts come up across all of them.

Care & support work in Bristol
Most care in Bristol is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Bristol City Council is the unitary adult social care authority for a city of nearly half a million people, and its adult social care was rated ‘Good’ by the CQC in 2025. The work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation, so whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Bristol is one of the youngest of the UK’s core cities — its median age is just 33.4, against 40.3 for England, and only around one in eight residents is aged 65 or over, well below the national share. But the 2021 census still counted 60,760 older residents, and they cluster in the outer northern suburbs such as Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze, home to many of the city’s older people’s care homes. Care assistants are the backbone of those homes, supporting residents with personal care, meals and companionship.

As the unitary authority, Bristol City Council commissions supported living rather than residential placements for many disabled adults, with independent-living networks such as KeyRing operating right across the city to help people stay in their own tenancies. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support build everyday skills and live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

Bristol runs one of England’s longest-established integrated dementia services — the Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service, delivered in partnership by the Alzheimer’s Society and Devon Partnership NHS Trust and commissioned across the city since 2015, giving every person diagnosed a named dementia navigator. With around 100 staff supporting people from diagnosis through to end of life, dementia is a major part of local care work. It is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting older people to live well day to day.

Bristol has a genuine specialist neuro cluster on the northern edge of the city, centred on the old Frenchay Hospital site: the 52-bed Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, run by Active Care Group across two units with a high-dependency ward, alongside the Bristol-based Arbor community neurorehabilitation team and the long-standing Headway Bristol charity. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy, ventilation and other clinical support.
