    The county we cover

    Buckinghamshire’s healthcare landscape

A quick picture of who runs care across the county, from the acute wards at Stoke Mandeville and the Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury to the secure estate at Grendon Underwood.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is the county’s main acute provider, running Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury alongside Wycombe Hospital and Amersham Hospital. Stoke Mandeville is home to the internationally recognised National Spinal Injuries Centre, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, and it doubles as a regional centre for burns, plastic surgery and dermatology, with an emergency department, critical care, maternity and the county’s main elective surgery lists. There is no major trauma centre inside the county, so the most seriously injured patients are taken on to the John Radcliffe in Oxford or into London. Milton Keynes sits within ceremonial Buckinghamshire but is a separate unitary area with its own acute provider, Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Mental health and community services come from Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, whose Whiteleaf Centre on Bierton Road in Aylesbury holds inpatient wards for adults of working age and older people, backed by community teams and a Primary Care Mental Health Hub across the county. Secure and forensic work sits close by too: HMP Grendon, a Category B therapeutic community, and the open HMP Spring Hill share a site at Grendon Underwood, while HMP Woodhill sits over in the Milton Keynes unitary. On the independent side, The Chiltern Hospital at Great Missenden and The Shelburne Hospital in the grounds of Wycombe Hospital, both part of Circle Health Group, run planned surgery and diagnostics. District nursing, health visiting and palliative care round out a busy community picture from bases in Buckingham, Marlow and Chalfont & Gerrards Cross.

        Nursing & care homes

Buckinghamshire is a slightly older county than the national picture, with around one in five residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 census and that share set to climb, which keeps nursing and residential homes across the Chilterns and Aylesbury Vale busy. We book RGN and RMN shifts for homes registered with the CQC, from long days to sleep-ins.

        Mental health

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust runs the county’s mental health services, centred on the Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury with its adult and older-people inpatient wards, plus community teams and crisis support. We staff RMN shifts across inpatient wards, community teams and older-people’s mental health.

        Prison nursing

The county has a real secure estate. HMP Grendon, a Category B therapeutic community, and the open HMP Spring Hill share a site at Grendon Underwood, and HMP Woodhill sits nearby in the Milton Keynes unitary. Prison healthcare here is commissioned through NHS partners, and we place nurses into primary care, mental health and substance-misuse roles behind the gate when they come up.

        Critical care

Stoke Mandeville runs the county’s critical care unit alongside its emergency department, and as home to the National Spinal Injuries Centre it takes complex spinal and rehabilitation patients from across the country. With no major trauma centre in-county, the sickest trauma patients route to the John Radcliffe in Oxford, so we place ITU and HDU-experienced nurses where that acuity lands.

        Theatres

Elective surgery runs at Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals, and on the independent side at The Chiltern Hospital in Great Missenden and The Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe, both Circle Health Group sites with their own theatre suites. We cover scrub, anaesthetic and recovery shifts across NHS and private lists.

Care & support work in Buckinghamshire

Care and support work in Buckinghamshire

Most care in Buckinghamshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Buckinghamshire Council is the unitary authority responsible for adult social care across the county’s roughly 550,000 residents, and the work spans elderly care homes in the Chilterns, supported living around Aylesbury and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Buckinghamshire is an older county than the national average, with around one in five residents aged 65 or over, but the picture is very uneven: in the Chiltern villages of the Missendens more than a quarter of residents are aged 65 or over, against roughly one in eight in central Aylesbury. That concentration of older people keeps care homes across the Chilterns and the Aylesbury Vale busy, and care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Care assistant sharing a warm moment with an older resident

        Support worker

Buckinghamshire Council has been investing in its services for adults with a learning disability and complex needs, setting up a dedicated learning-disabilities team and expanding day care and overnight respite provision. Alongside the council, providers such as SeeAbility run purpose-built supported living in Aylesbury for adults with sight loss, learning disabilities and autism. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

As an older-than-average county, Buckinghamshire has a growing number of residents living with dementia, and the Alzheimer’s Society runs the county’s Memory Support Service on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council and the local NHS care group. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day in care homes across the Chilterns and the Aylesbury Vale.

        Brain injury

Buckinghamshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence around Aylesbury — Brainkind’s Kent House, a residential home for people with acquired brain injuries, alongside the NHS Buckinghamshire Neurological Rehabilitation Unit and the Community Head Injury Service based in the town. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.

Which hospitals will I work in across Buckinghamshire?

Most acute shifts sit within Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury along with Wycombe and Amersham hospitals. We also book work at the independent Chiltern Hospital in Great Missenden and Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe. We name these as the local landscape only; Novello is an independent agency and holds no endorsement from any NHS trust.

Yes. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services across the county, centred on the Whiteleaf Centre in Aylesbury, and we book RMN shifts across inpatient wards and community teams as they come up.

There is a secure estate at Grendon Underwood, where HMP Grendon and HMP Spring Hill share a site, plus HMP Woodhill in the neighbouring Milton Keynes unitary. We place nurses into primary care, mental health and substance-misuse roles across prison healthcare when they are available.
