The county we cover
Cambridgeshire’s care reaches far beyond Addenbrooke’s and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, and so does the work.
Acute care in the county is shared across three NHS trusts. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Addenbrooke’s, the East of England’s major trauma centre and one of the largest hospitals in the country, along with the neighbouring Rosie maternity hospital. On the same Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital and a national cardiothoracic transplant and ECMO centre. To the north and west, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust runs Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon and Stamford and Rutland Hospital just over the border.
There is far more beyond the acute wards. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and community services across the county, from Fulbourn Hospital near Cambridge, with its adult acute, older-adult and psychiatric intensive care wards, to the Cavell Centre in Peterborough and district nursing in people’s own homes. The county’s secure estate includes HMP Whitemoor near March, HMP Littlehey near Huntingdon and HMP Peterborough. Add a busy independent sector, with the Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, Spire Cambridge Lea and the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough, and the range of work is genuinely wide.
Where we work
We place nurses, ODPs and care staff in settings right across Cambridgeshire, not just Addenbrooke’s and Peterborough City Hospital.
NHS and independent hospitals across the county, from the major acute and specialist sites in Cambridge to the district hospitals in Peterborough and Huntingdon.
Nursing and residential homes, plus community and district nursing in people’s own homes, across the city, the market towns and the Fens.
Inpatient and secure mental health services at sites like Fulbourn Hospital, plus the county’s prisons, for nurses who want varied, autonomous work.
We work with candidates and clients right across the county, from Cambridge, Peterborough and Ely to Huntingdon, St Neots, Wisbech, March and the Fenland towns.
Working across the border? We also cover the East of England, Suffolk and Hertfordshire.

Specialisms in Cambridgeshire
Whatever you specialise in, from the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to the Fenland care homes, Cambridgeshire has genuine demand. Here is where the work is.
Cambridgeshire’s care sector is busy, and an ageing population keeps it that way. In 2024 care directories listed around 139 care homes across the county, roughly 58 of them providing nursing care. That means steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, close to home.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services across the county. Fulbourn Hospital near Cambridge is home to adult acute, older-adult and psychiatric intensive care wards, with the neighbouring Ida Darwin site alongside for children and young people, including the Phoenix Centre eating disorder unit, while the Cavell Centre covers the north of the county from Peterborough. The trust also runs a specialist adult eating disorder inpatient ward, S3, on the Addenbrooke’s site. Mental health is a growing area of work for us, across inpatient, secure and community settings.

Cambridgeshire’s secure estate runs to three prisons: HMP Whitemoor, a high-security Category A prison near March, HMP Littlehey near Huntingdon, and HMP Peterborough, the only purpose-built prison in the country holding both men and women. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

Because Addenbrooke’s is the East of England’s major trauma centre, Cambridgeshire carries a lot of high-acuity and specialist work, including neurosciences, transplant and critical care, with Royal Papworth adding cardiothoracic and ECMO work alongside it. For ITU and HDU nurses who are confident with the most unstable patients, critical care shifts come up regularly across the county.

Alongside its NHS lists, Cambridgeshire has a busy independent hospital sector running elective and day-case surgery, including the Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, Spire Cambridge Lea and the Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical staff, theatre work comes up regularly across both the NHS and independent sites.

Care & support work in Cambridgeshire
Most care in Cambridgeshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Cambridgeshire County Council runs adult social care across a large, largely rural county, from Cambridge and the market towns out to the Fens, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist learning-disability teams. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Cambridgeshire’s population is ageing fastest in the north and east: East Cambridgeshire is projected to see the biggest rise in over-65s of any district in the county, around 31.5% by 2031. Across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough the 65-and-over population is projected to grow from about 157,000 to nearly 198,000 by 2031 — roughly 41,000 more older people. Care directories list around 139 care homes across the county, and care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Cambridgeshire County Council is steadily shifting support away from residential care towards supported living, and has set up a long-term open framework — running for up to ten years — to commission supported living places for adults across the county. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

In early 2024 around 6,300 older people were living with a diagnosed dementia across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and local health data estimates a further 4,400 or so are living with the condition undiagnosed — roughly 10,700 people in total. As the population ages, those numbers are projected to climb sharply, by around 41% in Cambridgeshire by 2040. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Cambridgeshire’s specialist learning-disability support is delivered jointly by the county council and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, through community teams based in Cambridge, Ely, March and Huntingdon. Alongside psychologists, therapists and community learning-disability nurses, support workers here help the people they support with everyday living, health and greater independence — in their own homes and out in the community across the county and the Fens.
