The work
What a care assistant shift actually looks like
You already know the job. Personal care, helping people wash and dress, mealtimes, mobility, keeping care records straight, and the quieter part that nobody puts in a job advert: knowing the residents well enough to spot when someone is not themselves.
Most of our care home work sits in one of four kinds of home, and they ask slightly different things of you. Residential homes, where people need support with daily living. Nursing homes, where you work alongside registered nurses. Dementia care, which homes usually split into residential and nursing, so it is worth saying which you have done. And respite or short stay, where residents come in for a week or two and you are getting to know someone new every shift.
Shifts
Days, nights, relief and bank
Care homes run every hour of the year, so the pattern matters as much as the role. Tell us which of these you want and we will only send you those.
Days
Earlies and lates, the busiest part of a home’s day. Personal care, mealtimes, activities and visitors.
Nights
Quieter, smaller teams, more responsibility on you. Checks, continence care, and the residents who do not settle.
Relief and bank
Pick up what suits you, when it suits you. Good alongside a permanent job, studying, or the school run.
Called something else?
Senior care assistant, care worker, carer
Homes name the job differently, and none of it changes what you actually do. If your badge says care assistant, senior care assistant, care worker or carer, this is your page. If you have done your NVQ or Level 2 and 3, say so when you enquire, because senior care assistant shifts usually pay more than standard ones.
