Nursing in Cornwall
Local shifts, honest pay and paperwork that does not eat your evenings.
Book work near home, whether that is a ward at Treliske, a nursing home on the Roseland or a community round out towards the Lizard. You choose the shifts, the settings and how far you are willing to travel, so the diary works around your life rather than the other way round.
Every shift shows its rate before you accept it, so there are no surprises when your payslip lands. You know what a night in Truro or a long day in Penzance is worth before you say yes, and payment runs on a clear, regular cycle.
We keep your NMC registration, mandatory training and DBS in one place and give you a nudge before anything runs out. Turn up ready to work instead of chasing certificates the night before a shift.
The county we cover
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly sit at the far end of the South West peninsula, served by a single acute trust, with an older population than most of England and long miles between community hospitals.
Acute hospital care across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is run by Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. Its main site is the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske on the edge of Truro, the county’s largest hospital and the base for emergency and specialist services. The Trust also runs West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance and St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle, home to the Marie Therese House neuro rehabilitation unit. Cornwall has no major trauma centre of its own: the Royal Cornwall Hospital sits as a trauma unit within the Peninsula Major Trauma Network, and the most serious cases are taken across the Tamar to the major trauma centre at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, which also provides tertiary neurosurgery and cardiothoracic care for the whole South West peninsula.
Mental health, learning disability and community services are provided by Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Its main inpatient mental health site is Longreach House at the Camborne Redruth hospital, with acute wards, an older adult ward and a health based place of safety. The Trust also runs a network of community hospitals with minor injury units in towns including Bodmin, St Austell, Falmouth, Helston, Newquay and Stratton, along with the district nursing teams that carry much of the county’s day to day care. Cornwall has no prison of its own; the old Bodmin Jail closed in 1927 and is now a visitor attraction, so people committed by the courts are held in the Devon estate, chiefly HMP Exeter. On the independent side, the Duchy Hospital in Truro, part of Ramsay Health Care, is Cornwall’s only private hospital and handles a good deal of planned surgery.

Specialisms in Cornwall
Whatever your field, there is local work to match it.
Cornwall has one of the oldest populations in England: the 2021 Census put more than a quarter of residents, around 25 per cent, at 65 or over, well above the England average of roughly 18 per cent. That feeds steady demand for nursing and residential care, dementia support and palliative work across a large network of care homes, from Truro and St Austell out to the coastal towns. If you like continuity and building a rapport with residents, there is plenty of it here.

Mental health work centres on Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and its inpatient wards at Longreach House, at the Camborne Redruth hospital site, which include acute beds, an older adult ward and a health based place of safety. There is also community mental health and learning disability work across the county, so RMNs and support staff can find shifts on and off the wards.

Cornwall has no prison. Bodmin Jail closed in 1927 and now trades as a heritage attraction, and people sentenced by the Cornish courts are usually held in the Devon estate, mainly HMP Exeter. So there is no in county prison nursing here. If secure and forensic work is your thing, the nearest openings tend to sit over the border in Devon, alongside the forensic and secure mental health services run within the wider South West.

Critical care and emergency work in Cornwall is anchored by the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske, which runs the county’s emergency department and intensive care and sits as a trauma unit in the Peninsula Major Trauma Network. The most serious trauma is stabilised and transferred to the major trauma centre at Derriford in Plymouth, so ITU and HDU experience is always in demand this far down the peninsula.

Theatre teams are needed for both NHS and private lists. The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske carries the bulk of the county’s surgery, while the Duchy Hospital in Truro, run by Ramsay Health Care, handles a steady stream of planned orthopaedic, general and day case work. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses and ODPs all find shifts across the two.

Care & support work in Cornwall
Most care in Cornwall is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Cornwall Council is the single unitary authority responsible for adult social care across the whole peninsula, and with one of the oldest populations in England the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Cornwall has one of the oldest populations in England: the 2021 Census put more than a quarter of the county’s people, around 25 per cent, or roughly 144,200 residents, at 65 or over, against about 18 per cent nationally. That feeds steady demand across Cornwall’s residential and nursing homes, from Truro and St Austell out to the coastal towns and the far west. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Cornwall Council’s Better Lives strategy is built around helping adults with a learning disability and autistic people lead independent, fulfilled lives through supported living in their own homes and community-based support. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own tenancies and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

An estimated 9,460 people in Cornwall are living with dementia, of whom over 5,000 have a formal diagnosis, and the county’s ageing population means that number is set to keep climbing. Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust runs a dedicated Memory Assessment Service, staffed by specialist memory practitioners, that carries out diagnosis and post-diagnostic support. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Cornwall has its own specialist neuro-rehabilitation unit — Marie Therese House at St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle, run by Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, providing inpatient rehabilitation for people with neurological injury. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
