The work
Nursing where every detail counts
Critical care is among the most technical and demanding work in the profession.
On a critical care shift you are looking after the sickest patients in the hospital, often one to one. That can mean managing a ventilated, sedated patient and titrating vasoactives and inotropes. You watch invasive monitoring, read arterial blood gases and act on a change before it becomes a crisis. You work closely with the intensivists, physiotherapists and the wider critical care team, and you carry a level of responsibility that few other settings ask of you.
It suits confident, experienced nurses who are comfortable with high-dependency and ventilated patients and who stay calm when things move quickly. If you know your way around organ support, invasive lines and rapid assessment, and you like work that keeps you thinking, agency critical care lets you use those skills across different units on your own schedule. Level 2 and level 3 units, day or night, wherever your competencies are needed.

What you’ll need
Your NMC registration
A valid NMC PIN as an RGN, with your standard NHS-level compliance up to date.
Critical care experience
Recent time in ITU, ICU or HDU and the competencies that come with caring for ventilated, high-dependency patients.
