    The work

What dementia care work actually looks like

The practical care is the same care work you already know, helping people wash and dress, mealtimes, keeping records straight. What makes dementia care its own thing is everything around that: knowing when to slow down, when to change the subject, when to just sit with someone, and how to have the same conversation warmly for the tenth time.

Homes usually split dementia care into two. Residential dementia, where residents need support with daily living and a settled, familiar routine. And nursing dementia, where you work alongside registered nurses for residents with higher needs. Tell us which you have done and we will match you to it.

    The work

    Residential and nursing dementia

Dementia care runs across residential and nursing homes, days and nights. Tell us where you are comfortable and we will keep to it.

    Residential dementia

Supporting residents with daily living in a calm, familiar setting, where routine and a friendly face do a lot of the work.

    Nursing dementia

Higher-needs care alongside registered nurses, for residents whose dementia sits with other health conditions.

    Days and nights

Dementia does not keep to daytime. Nights are quieter but ask for patience with residents who are restless or unsettled.

    Called something else?

Care assistant, senior care assistant, nurse

Whether your badge says care assistant, senior care assistant or registered nurse, dementia homes need you. If you have done your NVQ or hold nursing registration, say so when you enquire. Experience with the harder days, distress, wandering, resistance to care, is worth mentioning too, because it is exactly what these homes are looking for.
