Nursing in Derbyshire
Straightforward booking, honest pay and proper compliance support, whether you are in Derby, Chesterfield or a Peak District market town.
Pick up work close to home or travel for the right rate. We cover the whole county, from the Royal Derby Hospital and the Nuffield in the south to Chesterfield Royal in the north, plus care and community roles in Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper, Matlock and Buxton. You choose what you take in the app.
You see the rate before you accept a shift, not after. No guessing, no chasing. Every booking in the app shows the pay clearly, and we sort timesheets and payment without the usual back and forth.
We keep your NMC registration checks, DBS, mandatory training and references in order so you stay ready to work. Our team chases the paperwork so you can focus on the ward, the home or the unit.
The county we cover
Derbyshire is served by two acute NHS trusts, a dedicated mental health trust, a community services trust, a busy independent hospital and a large care sector shaped by an older than average population.
Acute care in Derbyshire runs on two NHS foundation trusts. In the south, University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Derby Hospital on Uttoxeter Road, a major teaching hospital and the region’s designated major trauma centre, alongside the Florence Nightingale Community Hospital in Derby, which was renamed from the London Road Community Hospital in 2021. Community hospitals elsewhere in the county, including Ripley, Ilkeston and the Cavendish at Buxton, are run separately by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. To the north, Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs Chesterfield Royal Hospital at Calow, whose 24 hour emergency department serves Chesterfield, Bolsover, Dronfield and the wider north of the county. Between them these two acute trusts cover well over a million residents spread across the city of Derby, the coalfield towns and the Peak District.
Mental health and community services are provided by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Its acute inpatient wards sit in the Radbourne Unit on the Royal Derby Hospital site and the Hartington Unit in Chesterfield, and its Making Room for Dignity programme has opened newer facilities including the Carsington Unit and Kingfisher House, the county’s first male psychiatric intensive care unit, at Kingsway Hospital in Derby, plus Bluebell Ward for older adults at Walton Hospital in Chesterfield. The county also holds two prisons, HMP Sudbury and HMP Foston Hall, and on the independent side Nuffield Health Derby Hospital handles planned surgery and diagnostics to the south west of the city. Community and district nursing reach out into rural areas around Ashbourne, Bakewell and the High Peak.

Specialisms in Derbyshire
Whatever your background, there is work for it across Derbyshire’s settings, from theatres at the Royal Derby Hospital and Chesterfield Royal to the mental health wards at Kingsway Hospital and healthcare teams behind the gate at HMP Sudbury and HMP Foston Hall.
Derbyshire skews older than England as a whole. At the 2021 census around 22 per cent of the county’s residents were aged 65 or over, against roughly 18 per cent nationally, and Derbyshire County Council’s own ageing population planning expects the number of people aged 90 and above to more than double by 2043. That underpins consistent nursing and residential home demand across Belper, Matlock, Ashbourne, Bakewell and the Derby and Chesterfield suburbs, in homes registered and inspected by the Care Quality Commission.

Mental health inpatient care in the county is provided by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Acute wards run at the Radbourne Unit on the Royal Derby Hospital site and the Hartington Unit in Chesterfield, while the trust’s Making Room for Dignity investment has brought newer facilities online including the Carsington Unit and Kingfisher House, described as the county’s first male psychiatric intensive care unit, at Kingsway Hospital in Derby, and Bluebell Ward for older adults at Walton Hospital in Chesterfield. We place mental health nurses and support workers across these kinds of settings.

Derbyshire has two prisons. HMP Sudbury, near Ashbourne, is an open, lower security men’s prison, and HMP Foston Hall, near Foston, is a closed women’s prison and young offender institution. Both rely on prison healthcare teams delivering primary and mental health care behind the gate, and we support nurses and healthcare assistants who want to move into this kind of secure environment work.

The Royal Derby Hospital is the region’s designated major trauma centre and a major teaching hospital, which means intensive care, resuscitation and high dependency work at scale, while Chesterfield Royal Hospital runs its own busy emergency department and critical care for the north of the county. We place experienced ITU, HDU and emergency nurses into these environments where the pace and acuity are highest.

Surgical work spans NHS and independent theatres. The Royal Derby Hospital and Chesterfield Royal both run full operating lists across scrub, anaesthetics and recovery, and Nuffield Health Derby Hospital, along with private practice run in partnership with the local NHS trust, adds planned surgery and endoscopy. Scrub, ODP-adjacent recovery and theatre nurses will find regular work here.

Care & support work in Derbyshire
Most care in Derbyshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Derbyshire County Council is the upper-tier adult social care authority for a county that skews noticeably older than England as a whole, with around 22 per cent of residents aged 65 or over, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Demand is heaviest in the rural north and west of the county: in the Derbyshire Dales the median age has climbed to 51, among the oldest of any district in the East Midlands, and the number of residents aged 65 or over grew by more than a quarter in the decade to 2021. Care assistants are the backbone of the county’s older people’s homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Derbyshire County Council still directly runs some of its own learning-disability services rather than commissioning every one out, including the Morewood Centre in Alfreton, which provides planned short breaks for adults with a learning disability or autism. Alongside the independent supported-living providers working across the county, that means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

Around 10,000 people in Derbyshire had a dementia diagnosis in 2024, with a further 4,677 estimated to be living with it undiagnosed, and Joined Up Care Derbyshire expects the total to rise toward 22,000 by 2030 as the population ages. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Derbyshire has a genuine specialist neuro cluster — the Kings Lodge Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the Florence Nightingale Community Hospital in Derby, Voyage Care’s Markham House near Bolsover, which supports up to 17 adults with brain injuries and complex neurological needs, and its newer Linnet Mews rehabilitation service at Clowne, alongside the Headway North Derbyshire charity. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
