The work
The nurse who keeps people well at home
District nursing is skilled, autonomous care for the patients who cannot easily come to you.
District nurses look after some of the most complex patients in the community, the housebound, the frail and those at the end of their lives, all in their own homes. On a round you might be managing complicated wounds and pressure care, running syringe drivers and palliative symptom control, caring for catheters and IV lines, and coordinating everything the patient needs from the GP, the pharmacy and social care. You carry a caseload and, often, lead a small team of community staff around it.
It is nursing built on assessment, continuity and trust, where you see the same patients and families through long journeys and difficult times. It suits experienced nurses who are confident holding clinical responsibility on their own and organising complex care across a caseload. Getting started
What you’ll need
Your NMC registration
A current NMC PIN as a registered nurse, in good standing, with your compliance up to date.
Community experience and a car
Recent district or community nursing experience, plus a full driving licence and access to a car. A district nurse (SPQ) qualification is a real plus for caseload-holding roles.
