Nursing in East Sussex
A simpler way to work, built around your life and the places you already know.
Whether you are on the coast at Eastbourne, Bexhill and Seaford, up in the Weald around Crowborough and Uckfield, or in the city at Brighton and Hove, you will find work that fits around the school run, another job and the train-and-bus reality of getting round the county.
The rate is on the shift before you accept it, so you always know exactly what you are earning. We do not hide it behind a booking, and we pay when we say we will.
Our team keeps your training, DBS and revalidation in order so you are cleared to work across NHS and independent settings in East Sussex without the last-minute scramble.
The area we cover
From the region’s major trauma centre in Brighton to the district hospitals on the coast, East Sussex leans on nurses across a wide spread of settings.
Two NHS trusts shape the acute picture here. East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust runs the county’s two district general hospitals, the Conquest at St Leonards-on-Sea near Hastings and Eastbourne DGH, alongside community hospitals at Bexhill, Rye and Uckfield. It is the only integrated provider of acute and community care in Sussex, so its work reaches from busy emergency departments right into people’s own homes. Consultant-led maternity and single-sited trauma surgery are centred at the Conquest, while acute stroke and urology sit at Eastbourne. Over the county boundary in Brighton, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital, the region’s major trauma centre and a tertiary hub for neurosciences, cardiac surgery, renal medicine and the Sussex Cancer Centre. Its new Louisa Martindale Building opened to patients in June 2023.
Mental health across the county is led by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Woodlands Centre for acute inpatient care on the Conquest site and the Hellingly Centre near Hailsham, a medium secure forensic unit. HMP and YOI Lewes, a category B local prison serving the local courts, sits in the county town and brings its own healthcare needs. On the independent side, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital at Woodingdean and the Spire-run Montefiore Hospital in Hove handle a steady flow of planned surgery. Add a large district nursing workforce and one of the biggest care-home sectors on the south coast, and the range of nursing work here is genuinely broad.

Specialisms in East Sussex
From the Conquest and Eastbourne DGH to Sussex Partnership’s mental health wards and the care homes of Rother, East Sussex needs nurses across a broad span of specialisms.
East Sussex has one of the oldest populations in the country. In 2024 around 27 per cent of residents were aged 65 or over, well above the England average of roughly 19 per cent, and in Rother the figure was around a third, the second highest of any district in England. That drives real demand for nursing-home and care-home shifts, sharpened by the care-home pressures the county council has flagged. If you value continuity of care with older residents, this is a good place to work.

Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health care across East Sussex, from the Woodlands Centre for acute inpatient care on the Conquest site to the Hellingly Centre, a medium secure forensic service near Hailsham. We place RMNs into acute wards, PICU and community teams, as well as secure and forensic environments for nurses who want that challenge.

HMP and YOI Lewes is the county’s prison, a category B local establishment holding men on remand and newly sentenced prisoners for the local courts. Prison healthcare is demanding and rewarding in equal measure, and it sits alongside the forensic mental health work at Hellingly for nurses drawn to secure settings. It is a distinct kind of nursing, and we are happy to talk it through before you commit.

The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is the region’s major trauma centre, with adult and neonatal intensive care and tertiary services in neurosciences, cardiac and renal medicine. The Conquest and Eastbourne DGH both run their own emergency departments and critical care. If you hold ITU, HDU or ED competencies, these are the units that need you.

Theatre work spans the NHS lists at the Conquest and Eastbourne DGH and the independent sector at Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital, which has a strong orthopaedic, spinal and eye-surgery focus, and the Montefiore Hospital in Hove. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses are always in demand across these sites.

Care & support work in East Sussex
Most care in East Sussex is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. East Sussex County Council commissions adult social care for one of the oldest populations in England, and the work spans seaside care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
East Sussex has one of the largest care-home markets on the south coast, with several hundred CQC-registered homes across the county. Demand is heaviest in the coastal districts: in Rother around a third of residents are aged 65 or over, the second highest proportion of any district in England. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

East Sussex County Council is working to expand supported living for people with a learning disability, in line with the national Building the Right Support programme and its own What Matters To You adult social care strategy. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

East Sussex has one of the oldest populations in England — more than a quarter of residents are aged 65 or over — so the number of older people living with dementia is high and set to keep rising as that population ages. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

East Sussex has a genuine specialist neuro cluster — the 12-bed Vines brain-injury centre in Crowborough and the Egerton Road neuro-rehabilitation service in Bexhill-on-Sea, both run by Priory, plus Brainkind’s purpose-built Shinewater Court in Eastbourne. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
