The area we cover
From a major city hospital in Hull to small community units on the coast, here is the ground you would be working across.
Acute hospital care across the area is led by Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which took its current name in 2019 and runs two main sites. Hull Royal Infirmary on Anlaby Road is home to the Hull Major Trauma Centre, the hub of the North Yorkshire and Humberside Major Trauma Network, taking the most serious injuries from across East Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. A few miles west at Cottingham, Castle Hill Hospital houses the trust’s cardiac services and the Queen’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology, one of the larger cancer centres in the region. Along the coast and in the market towns, smaller sites such as Bridlington Hospital, the East Riding Community Hospital in Beverley and the Alfred Bean Hospital in Driffield carry urgent treatment, rehabilitation and community beds.
Mental health, learning disability and community services sit with Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, which serves close to 800,000 people across Hull, the East Riding and beyond. Its Hull base at Miranda House on Anlaby Road holds acute mental health wards and the section 136 suite, while Townend Court on Cottingham Road in Hull is an assessment and treatment unit for people with a learning disability, and Westlands provides low secure care for women. The county also has a sizeable secure estate: HMP Hull, a category B local prison on Hedon Road, and HMP Humber near Everthorpe, a category C training prison formed in 2014 from the former Everthorpe and Wolds sites. On the independent side, the Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital at Anlaby, open since 1986, runs private surgery, cardiology and endoscopy alongside NHS-funded work.
Where we work
City wards, coastal community units and care homes across the East Riding, all in one place.
Acute wards, emergency and surgical work centre on Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, with the Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital at Anlaby adding independent theatre lists. We cover scrub, recovery, ward and department shifts across both NHS and private settings.
The East Riding has an older age profile than most of England, with more than a quarter of residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 Census, and that shows in a busy nursing and residential care sector from Beverley and Hessle out to Hornsea and Pocklington. We book nursing-home and community shifts across the patch.
From acute mental health wards at Miranda House in Hull to community mental health teams across the East Riding, and the secure estate at HMP Hull and HMP Humber, there is steady demand for registered mental health nurses and healthcare assistants in these settings.
We cover Hull, Beverley, Bridlington, Goole, Cottingham, Hessle, Driffield, Hornsea, Withernsea, Pocklington and the villages between them.
Working across the border? We also cover Yorkshire and the Humber, North Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Specialisms in East Yorkshire
Wherever your skills sit, there is genuine local work to match, from the Hull Major Trauma Centre to secure healthcare at HMP Hull and HMP Humber.
Older people’s care is a big part of the picture here. The East Riding has one of the oldest age profiles in Yorkshire, with more than a quarter of residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 Census, and the council commissions thousands of registered care beds across the county. That means steady nursing-home and residential shifts in Beverley, Driffield, Hessle, Hornsea and the surrounding villages, covering everything from general nursing to dementia and end-of-life care.

Mental health work across East Yorkshire runs mainly through Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. Its Hull hub at Miranda House on Anlaby Road holds acute adult wards and the crisis and section 136 suite, with learning disability services at Townend Court on Cottingham Road in Hull and low secure care for women at Westlands. Community mental health teams reach out across the East Riding, so there is regular work for registered mental health nurses and support staff.

East Yorkshire has a real secure estate, so healthcare-in-custody work is genuinely local. HMP Hull is a category B local prison on Hedon Road in the city, and HMP Humber near Everthorpe and Brough is a category C training prison formed in 2014 from the former Everthorpe and Wolds prisons. Both rely on primary care nurses, mental health nurses and healthcare assistants to run their healthcare wings.

Critical care and trauma centre on Hull Royal Infirmary, home to the Hull Major Trauma Centre and the hub of the North Yorkshire and Humberside Major Trauma Network. Alongside the emergency and intensive care work there, Castle Hill Hospital at Cottingham runs cardiac and cancer services, so experienced ITU, HDU and theatre-recovery nurses are in demand.

Theatre work spans NHS and independent sites. Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital carry the bulk of NHS surgical lists, from emergency and trauma to cardiac and cancer surgery, while the Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital at Anlaby runs private and NHS-funded lists across orthopaedics, general surgery and more. We book scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioners across both.

Care & support work in East Yorkshire
Most care in East Yorkshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The East Riding has one of the oldest age profiles in Yorkshire, with more than a quarter of residents aged 65 or over, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist brain-injury rehabilitation in and around Hull. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
The East Riding has well over 140 CQC-registered care homes, and the large majority are residential homes without nursing — the everyday older people’s homes where care assistants do most of the work. It is one of the oldest parts of Yorkshire, with more than a quarter of residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 Census, so demand is steady from Beverley and Hessle out to Hornsea and Pocklington. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Alongside its care homes, the East Riding commissions supported living for adults with a learning disability, spread across a large, mostly rural authority from Beverley and Driffield out to Goole and Bridlington. The council’s approach is built around helping people live full, independent lives in their own homes rather than in a care-home setting. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, out in the community.

More than 5,000 people are living with dementia across the East Riding, and that number is set to keep rising as one of the oldest populations in Yorkshire continues to age. Diagnosis and ongoing support run through Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, which provides memory assessment services across Hull and the East Riding. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting older residents to live well day to day.

East Yorkshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence — Brainkind’s Victoria House on Victoria Dock in Hull is a purpose-built 25-bed home for people with acquired brain injuries and complex neurological needs, alongside the Hull-based P.A.U.L for Brain Recovery charity and local Headway brain-injury support. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
