The county we cover
It helps to know the ground you are working on. Here is how care is organised across the county.
Acute hospital care in the county is run by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on Great Western Road in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. Between them the two sites cover the county’s emergency, surgical, maternity and specialist work, with the trust employing around 9,000 staff. Gloucestershire Royal runs the county’s main emergency department and trauma unit, and the most serious major trauma is taken on to the major trauma centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol under the Severn Major Trauma Network, with the Gloucester site serving as one of that network’s trauma units. Much of the planned surgery, along with the trust’s cancer and oncology services, is concentrated at Cheltenham General.
Mental health, learning disability and community services are provided by Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust. Its main inpatient mental health site is Wotton Lawn Hospital in Gloucester, an acute unit with admission wards including Abbey Ward and Dean Ward, alongside the Greyfriars psychiatric intensive care unit and the Montpellier low secure unit. The same trust runs community hospitals and district nursing across the market towns and rural areas. On the secure side, HMP Leyhill, a category D open prison, sits near Wotton-under-Edge, while HMP Eastwood Park, a women’s prison, lies just over the border at Falfield in South Gloucestershire; the old city jail, HMP Gloucester, closed back in 2013. For private and insured surgery the county has Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital and the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester, run by Ramsay.

Specialisms in Gloucestershire
Whatever your background, from theatre lists at Cheltenham General to secure work at HMP Leyhill, there is Gloucestershire work to match it.
Gloucestershire has an older population than most. Around 22 per cent of residents were aged 65 or over at the 2021 census, above the England and Wales average of roughly 19 per cent, and the county council’s 2024 market position statement points to steadily rising demand for nursing and dementia beds over the next twenty years. That means plenty of nursing and senior care roles in homes across the county, from Gloucester and Cheltenham to the Cotswold and Forest of Dean towns.

Most inpatient mental health work centres on Wotton Lawn Hospital in Gloucester, run by Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, with its acute admission wards, the Greyfriars psychiatric intensive care unit and the Montpellier low secure unit. Add the community mental health teams and older-adult services spread across the county and there is regular work for mental health nurses and support staff.

Gloucestershire’s own city prison, HMP Gloucester, closed in 2013, so there is no large jail in the centre of the county any more. Secure healthcare work is instead found at HMP Leyhill, the category D open prison near Wotton-under-Edge, and at HMP Eastwood Park women’s prison just over the county line at Falfield in South Gloucestershire, alongside the low secure and forensic mental health provision at Wotton Lawn. If prison or secure nursing is your thing, we can point you to what is going on nearby.

Critical care and the county’s main emergency and trauma unit are based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester. The most serious major trauma is routed on to the major trauma centre at Southmead in Bristol under the Severn Major Trauma Network, with Gloucester acting as one of the network’s trauma units, so ITU, HDU and emergency-experienced nurses are always wanted at the Gloucester site.

Theatre work spans the NHS lists at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General, where much of the planned surgery sits, plus the independent sector. Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital runs three theatres across orthopaedics, spinal, ENT, gynaecology and urology, and the Winfield Hospital in Gloucester, part of Ramsay Health Care, runs three theatres covering routine to complex surgery, so scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses have options on both sides.

Care & support work in Gloucestershire
Most care in Gloucestershire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Gloucestershire County Council is the upper-tier authority responsible for adult social care across the county, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living, dementia care and brain-injury rehabilitation. With an older population well above the national average, demand is steady from Gloucester and Cheltenham out to the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Gloucestershire has an older population than most of England — around 22 per cent of residents were aged 65 or over at the 2021 census, against roughly 19 per cent across England and Wales. One of the biggest names locally is the not-for-profit Orders of St John Care Trust, which runs around a dozen older people’s care homes across the county, from Gloucester and Cheltenham out to the Cotswold towns. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Alongside its care homes, Gloucestershire County Council’s 2024 market position statement counts 51 providers offering supported living in the county, of which 48 support people with a learning disability. The council is steering its commissioning towards reablement and independence rather than residential placements, which means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community.

NHS Gloucestershire estimates around 6,200 people aged 65 and over in the county have been diagnosed with dementia, with roughly 3,500 more thought to be living with it undiagnosed, and the total is expected to reach about 13,000 by 2030. The One Gloucestershire Dementia Strategy 2023 to 2028 sets out how local services are gearing up for that rise. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Gloucestershire has a genuine neuro-rehabilitation offer — the countywide Gloucestershire Brain Injury Team, run by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from Beacon House at Gloucestershire Royal, works alongside the charity Headway Gloucestershire and its enablement centre in Gloucester. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
