    The county we cover

    Hampshire’s healthcare landscape

Hampshire runs on three big acute trusts, a large community and mental health trust, and a busy independent sector.

Acute care in Hampshire is delivered by three NHS trusts. University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust runs Southampton General, home to the region’s major trauma centre and one of only two places in the south of England providing full onsite major trauma care for both adults and children, alongside Princess Anne Hospital and Southampton Children’s Hospital. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust runs Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham, and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust covers Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Southampton, Basingstoke and Queen Alexandra all sit within the Wessex Trauma Network, so demand for ward, theatre and critical care nurses runs right across the county.

Community, mental health and learning disability services are provided by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, formed on 1 October 2024 when Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Solent NHS Trust merged and took on the Isle of Wight’s community and mental health services. Its inpatient sites include Antelope House in Southampton, Melbury Lodge on the Royal Hampshire County Hospital site in Winchester, Parklands Hospital in Basingstoke and the regional secure forensic unit at Ravenswood House near Fareham. The county’s independent sector adds Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester, Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital near Eastleigh and the Spire hospitals in Southampton and Portsmouth. HMP Winchester is the county’s main prison, and on top of all this sits a large community nursing workload spread across a big county, from the Solent coast to the northern market towns.

        Nursing & care homes

Hampshire is one of England’s largest shire counties and has a notably older population, especially along the coast and in the New Forest, so nursing and residential homes make up a big share of the work. Hampshire County Council commissions care through a framework of CQC-registered providers, and with national care-home occupancy back up to around 84 per cent in 2024/25 (CQC), demand for reliable agency nurses in older people’s care stays high.

        Mental health

Mental health work sits mainly with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. That covers acute wards and the Hamtun psychiatric intensive care unit at Antelope House in Southampton, adult wards and a mother and baby unit at Melbury Lodge in Winchester, and adult wards plus the Hazel psychiatric intensive care unit at Parklands Hospital in Basingstoke, alongside a large community mental health service.

        Prison nursing

HMP Winchester, a Category B reception prison with a separate Category C unit, is the main prison inside the county boundary. The old Kingston prison in Portsmouth closed in 2013, so the wider estate now sits mostly across the Surrey and Dorset borders. Much of Hampshire’s secure nursing therefore runs through forensic mental health rather than the prison estate, above all at Ravenswood House near Fareham, the medium and low secure forensic unit run by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare.

        Critical care

Southampton General is the region’s major trauma centre and one of only two hospitals in the south of England offering full onsite major trauma care for adults and children, with tertiary cardiac, neurosciences and children’s services on site. Queen Alexandra in Cosham and Basingstoke and North Hampshire act as trauma units within the Wessex Trauma Network, so there is steady demand for ITU, HDU and theatre recovery nurses.

        Theatres

Surgical work spans NHS theatres at Southampton General, Queen Alexandra, Basingstoke and North Hampshire and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, plus the independent sector at Sarum Road Hospital in Winchester with its two theatres and high dependency unit, Nuffield Health Wessex near Eastleigh, and the Spire hospitals in Southampton and Portsmouth. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses are in regular demand.

Care & support work in Hampshire

Care and support work in Hampshire

Most care in Hampshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Hampshire is one of England’s largest shire counties, and its county council runs one of the biggest adult social care operations in the country, spanning elderly care homes along the coast and in the New Forest, supported living, and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Hampshire’s older-people care work is heaviest along the coast and in the New Forest, where around 30% of residents are aged 65 or over — one of the oldest populations in the South East, with a median age of around 51. Care assistants are the backbone of the county’s residential and nursing homes, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Hampshire County Council is steadily moving support for people with learning disabilities, autism and physical disabilities away from residential care and towards supported living, commissioning a growing number of supported-living places across the county. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

More than 18,000 people across the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight area have a recorded dementia diagnosis, a total that rose by around 5% in the year to July 2025. With a local diagnosis rate of roughly 64%, many more older people are thought to be living with the condition undiagnosed, so demand for skilled dementia care stays high. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

Hampshire has a genuine specialist neuro cluster — Inspire Neurocare’s neurological rehabilitation centre at Nursling on the edge of Southampton, its sister centre in Basingstoke, and the Headway brain-injury charity centre at Totton. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
