The county we cover
Hertfordshire sits just north of London with a healthcare map split between two acute NHS trusts, a countywide mental health trust and a busy independent sector.
Acute NHS care in Hertfordshire runs through two trusts. West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust covers the west of the county from Watford General Hospital, which holds the emergency department and intensive care, alongside St Albans City Hospital as its planned surgery centre and Hemel Hempstead Hospital. East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust covers the rest from the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, the trust’s main site for emergency and critical care with a hyper-acute stroke unit, plus the New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City and Hertford County Hospital, and it also runs the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. Hertfordshire has no designated major trauma centre of its own, so the most serious trauma travels on to London or Cambridge, but the Lister and Watford General between them carry the county’s emergency, theatre and intensive care workload.
Mental health and learning disability services are provided countywide by Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, whose Kingsley Green site near Radlett houses Kingfisher Court, an 86-bed adult acute inpatient unit, and the Oak Unit, a male psychiatric intensive care ward. Community nursing, from district nurses to children’s services, is run by Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust. The county’s one prison is HMP The Mount, a Category C men’s training prison outside Bovingdon. The independent sector is strong too, with Spire Bushey, Spire Harpenden, One Hatfield near Hatfield, Pinehill Hospital in Hitchin and the Rivers Hospital in Sawbridgeworth all running private theatre lists and inpatient beds.

We support acute and surgical work across Hertfordshire’s hospital sites, from the emergency and critical care hub at the Lister in Stevenage and Watford General, to planned surgery at St Albans City Hospital and the independent theatre lists at Spire Harpenden and Spire Bushey.
Hertfordshire’s large residential and nursing home sector needs steady, reliable cover, and community teams do too. We place nurses in care settings across towns like Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, Ware and Cheshunt, supporting older residents and those with complex needs.

Specialisms in Hertfordshire
From critical care at the Lister in Stevenage to theatre lists at Spire Harpenden and secure work at HMP The Mount near Bovingdon, there is Hertfordshire work to match your strengths.
Hertfordshire is home to roughly 1.2 million people, and around 17.5 per cent are aged over 65 as of mid-2024, a share set to keep rising. That keeps demand high across the county’s care and nursing homes, whose adult social care the Care Quality Commission rated ‘good’ at county council level in May 2024. We place nurses into residential and nursing home roles supporting older people and residents with dementia and complex long-term conditions.

Mental health nursing in Hertfordshire centres on Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs adult acute wards at Kingfisher Court and the Oak Unit psychiatric intensive care ward at its Kingsley Green site near Radlett, along with community and older adult mental health services across the county. We support nurses with the experience for these settings.

Hertfordshire has one prison, HMP The Mount near Bovingdon, a Category C men’s training establishment where healthcare is delivered much like a community practice behind the gate. For nurses drawn to secure and forensic work, the county also has psychiatric intensive care through Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, and the wider secure estate sits close by across London and the East of England.

Critical care in the county is concentrated at the Lister in Stevenage, where East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust runs intensive care across several critical care areas alongside a hyper-acute stroke unit, and at Watford General, the west of the county’s emergency and intensive care base. We place ITU and high dependency nurses into this kind of work.

Theatre nurses have plenty of scope in Hertfordshire. Planned NHS surgery runs through St Albans City Hospital as West Hertfordshire’s elective centre, while the independent sector adds busy operating lists at Spire Harpenden, Spire Bushey, One Hatfield, Pinehill Hospital in Hitchin and the Rivers Hospital in Sawbridgeworth. We cover scrub, anaesthetic and recovery roles.

Care & support work in Hertfordshire
Most care in Hertfordshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Hertfordshire County Council is the authority responsible for adult social care across a county of around 1.2 million people, and its service was rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission in May 2024. The work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Hertfordshire has a large care-home sector, with many of its registered homes providing nursing care, and the county council’s adult social care was rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission in May 2024. With some 216,000 older people across the county — about 17.5% of the population as of mid-2024, a share set to keep rising — demand across these homes stays high. Care assistants are the backbone of them, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Across Hertfordshire, more people with a learning disability are being supported to live in their own communities through supported living rather than residential homes. Providers such as MacIntyre support people in Hertfordshire both in shared supported-living homes and in their own tenancies, helping them live as independently as possible. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support with daily life, at home and out in the community.

As Hertfordshire’s older population grows — already more than 216,000 people aged over 65, a share set to keep rising — so does the number of people living with dementia across the county. Hertfordshire County Council backs advice and support for people and families affected by dementia, and dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector. It means supporting older people and residents to live well day to day, with patience and genuine connection.

Hertfordshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence — Brainkind’s Stagenhoe Park at St Paul’s Walden near Hitchin, a 45-bed neurological centre supporting people with an acquired brain injury and conditions such as Huntington’s and Parkinson’s, alongside the community neuro-rehabilitation team run by Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
