The county we cover
Lancashire’s healthcare runs far wider than any single hospital, and so does the work.
Acute care alone spans four NHS trusts. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals runs Royal Preston, the designated major trauma centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria, along with Chorley and South Ribble. East Lancashire Hospitals covers Royal Blackburn and Burnley General, Blackpool Victoria is home to the Lancashire Cardiac Centre, and Royal Lancaster Infirmary serves the north of the county.
There is far more beyond the wards. Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and community services across the county, from inpatient units to district nursing in people’s own homes. Add a large independent care sector and five prisons within the county, and the range of work is genuinely wide. Whatever your specialism, there is regular work near you.

Specialisms in Lancashire
Whatever you specialise in, Lancashire has genuine demand. Here is where the work is.
Lancashire’s care sector is large, and its older population keeps it busy. In 2023 the county council area had over 330 registered care homes for older residents, more than a hundred of them providing nursing care. That means steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, close to home.

Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services across the county, including The Harbour in Blackpool, a 154-bed hospital with its own psychiatric intensive care unit, and the secure Guild Lodge near Preston. Mental health is a growing area of work for us, across inpatient, secure and community settings.

Lancashire’s secure estate runs to five prisons, from HMP Garth and Wymott near Leyland to the open regime at HMP Kirkham. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

Because Royal Preston is the region’s major trauma centre, Lancashire carries a lot of high-acuity and specialist work, including neurosurgery, renal and burns care. For ITU and HDU nurses who are confident with the most unstable patients, critical care shifts come up regularly across the county.

Alongside its NHS lists, Lancashire has a busy independent hospital sector running elective and day-case surgery across the county. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, that means regular theatre work is never far away.
