    The work

What the work actually looks like

This is support work at its most person-led. It is about helping the people you support live life the way that suits them best, their routines, their choices, their home. Some days that is personal care and keeping things running; others it is getting to college, holding down a job, seeing friends, or just having a good afternoon.

Autism support, non-verbal communication and positive behaviour support all come up, and experience with any of them counts for a lot. The people you support are people we support, not patients, and the best support workers are the ones who see the person first.

    Settings

Supported living, residential and short breaks

The work takes a few shapes. Tell us which you are comfortable with and we will keep to it.

    Supported living

Helping someone live in their own home with the right level of support, from a few hours a week to round-the-clock.

    Residential services

A shared, staffed home where you support daily living, activities and getting out into the community.

    Short breaks and respite

Giving families a break by supporting someone for a few days or a week, often getting to know a new person each time.

    Called something else?

Support worker, key worker, PBS support

The role is named all sorts of ways, support worker, key worker, community support, complex needs support. If you have worked with people with a learning disability or autism, this is your page whatever the badge said. Positive behaviour support, epilepsy awareness and non-verbal communication are all worth flagging when you enquire.

If your experience is more health-led complex care, that has its own page.
