    The Leicestershire healthcare landscape

From University Hospitals of Leicester’s three big sites to the Partnership Trust’s community hospitals and three working prisons, Leicestershire’s healthcare runs far wider than any single building, and so does the work.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, formed in 2000 from the merger of the city’s three big hospitals, is the acute anchor for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Leicester Royal Infirmary in the city centre runs the county’s only accident and emergency department and is home to Leicester Children’s Hospital, whose Children’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe. Glenfield Hospital to the northwest carries nationally recognised heart and respiratory work, hosting the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre and one of the UK’s largest ECMO services, while Leicester General to the east is home to the Leicester Diabetes Centre and specialises in renal care and urology. Between them the three sites drive a steady flow of ward, theatre and critical care shifts.

Alongside the acute trust, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust runs mental health and community services across the county. Its Bradgate Mental Health Unit on the Glenfield site holds the acute admission wards and a psychiatric intensive care unit, and the low secure Herschel Prins Centre, open since 2001, provides forensic care. The trust also runs community hospitals in Loughborough, Hinckley, Coalville and Melton Mowbray for rehabilitation and end of life care. The secure estate adds HMP Leicester, HMP Gartree near Market Harborough and HMP Fosse Way, which opened in 2023, while Spire Leicester in Oadby and Nuffield Health Leicester keep the independent theatre lists busy.

    Where we work

    Where you will work

From Glenfield’s specialist units to care homes in Melton Mowbray and the acute wards of the Bradgate unit, Leicestershire’s settings are varied and the shifts follow. Here is the sort of work we cover.

    Hospitals and theatres

From the wards and theatres of Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield and Leicester General through to day-case lists at Spire Leicester in Oadby and Nuffield Health Leicester, there is acute and surgical work across the county.

    Care homes and the community

Nursing and residential homes across Leicester, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray and the market towns, plus community rehabilitation beds in the Partnership Trust’s local hospitals, keep steady demand for nurses and carers.

    Mental health and secure settings

Acute mental health at the Bradgate Unit, forensic care at the Herschel Prins Centre and healthcare inside HMP Leicester, Gartree and Fosse Way all need experienced staff.

We cover Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley, Coalville, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Wigston, Oadby, Lutterworth and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, plus the villages in between.

Working just over the county line? We also cover Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands region.

        Nursing & care homes

Leicestershire’s care sector keeps a large older population supported. CQC figures from June 2024 recorded 101 older adult care homes in the county council area, up from 93 in 2021, with around three quarters rated good or outstanding. That means consistent demand for nurses and carers across residential and nursing homes.

        Mental health

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust leads mental health care in the county. The Bradgate Mental Health Unit on the Glenfield site runs the acute admission wards and a psychiatric intensive care unit, and the Herschel Prins Centre provides low secure forensic care, so there is regular work for mental health nurses and support staff.

        Prison nursing

Leicestershire has a real secure estate. HMP Leicester is a Category B local prison on Welford Road, HMP Gartree near Market Harborough holds long-term and life-sentence prisoners, and HMP Fosse Way, a Category C resettlement prison built on the former Glen Parva site, opened in 2023. Prison healthcare shifts suit nurses who want something different from the ward.

        Critical care

Leicester Royal Infirmary runs the county’s only accident and emergency department, and as a trauma unit within the East Midlands Major Trauma Network it handles a high volume of acute and emergency work; the network’s designated major trauma centre is Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Glenfield’s cardiac, respiratory and ECMO services add further critical care and specialist demand for experienced nurses.

        Theatres

Alongside the NHS lists at the three Leicester hospitals, the county has a busy independent sector. Spire Leicester in Oadby and Nuffield Health Leicester both run elective and day-case surgery, with orthopaedics a particular strength, so there is scrub, recovery and theatre work to pick up.

Care & support work in Leicestershire

Care and support work in Leicestershire

Most care in Leicestershire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Leicestershire County Council runs adult social care across the county council area, which has more than 100 older people’s care homes alongside a growing network of supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Leicestershire’s older population is growing fastest in the market towns: in Harborough the number of people aged 65 and over rose by 38.5% between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, one of the largest increases anywhere in England. CQC figures recorded 101 older adult care homes across the county council area in June 2024, up from 93 three years earlier. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Leicestershire County Council is actively shifting support for working-age disabled adults away from residential care towards supported living, and people with a learning disability are the largest group living in that supported accommodation. The council is commissioning new, smaller supported-living schemes across the county, with a particular push in Melton and Market Harborough. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

More than 13,000 people aged 65 and over are estimated to be living with dementia across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, yet only around 8,000 have a formal diagnosis. The area’s Joint Living Well with Dementia Strategy for 2024 to 2028 is working to close that diagnosis gap and improve everyday support. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

Leicestershire has a genuine specialist neuro presence — the Brain Injury Unit at Leicester General Hospital, Leicestershire’s only NHS-funded rehabilitation unit and the Level 1 specialist rehabilitation unit for the East Midlands, sits alongside the trust’s Specialist Neurological Rehabilitation Unit and a Headway centre that has served Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland since 1990. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
