    The capital we cover

Every kind of nursing, right across London

London holds the densest concentration of healthcare anywhere in the UK, and the work runs far wider than any single hospital.

The capital has more NHS trusts and hospitals than anywhere in the country. Barts Health is the largest NHS trust in England, running The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham. Alongside it sit the big teaching trusts, Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare, UCLH and St George’s, and all four of London’s adult major trauma centres: King’s, The Royal London, St George’s and St Mary’s.

There is far more beyond the wards. Mental health runs across trusts like South London and Maudsley, East London and Central and North West London, with historic units including the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal. Add community and district nursing in every borough, the UK’s densest private hospital sector around Harley Street, and prisons including Wandsworth, Pentonville and Belmarsh, and the range of work is genuinely vast. Whatever your specialism, there is regular work near you.

        Nursing & care homes

London has a younger population than the rest of England, with far fewer over-65s, yet regulators have found the capital has the fewest care home beds per head of any English region. That mismatch keeps demand high. For RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, there is steady work in nursing and residential homes across the boroughs.

        Mental health

London’s mental health services are among the largest and best known in the country. Trusts including South London and Maudsley, East London and Central and North West London run inpatient, secure and community care across the capital, with historic units like the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal. Mental health is a growing area of work for us, across every setting.

        Prison nursing

London’s secure estate includes some of the best known prisons in the country, from Wandsworth, one of the largest in the UK, to Pentonville, Brixton, Wormwood Scrubs and the high-security Belmarsh. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

        Critical care

London holds all four of the capital’s adult major trauma centres, at King’s College Hospital, The Royal London, St George’s and St Mary’s, along with world-leading specialist and tertiary services. For ITU and HDU nurses who are confident with the most unstable patients, high-acuity critical care shifts come up regularly right across the city.

        Theatres

Alongside its NHS lists, London has the UK’s densest private hospital sector, centred on the Harley Street district and the big independent hospitals. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, that means a huge volume of theatre work across both the NHS and independent hospitals.

Care & support work in London

Care and support work in London

Most care in London is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. It is the biggest social care market in England — around 216,000 people work in adult social care across the capital — and it carries the highest care vacancy rate of any English region, so there is always work going. The roles span elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation, right across the 32 boroughs.

        Care assistant

London has among the fewest care-home beds per older person of any English region, so a great deal of care is delivered in people’s own homes as well as in residential and nursing homes. Demand for care assistants is heaviest in the outer, eastern boroughs: in Havering and Bromley more than a fifth of residents are aged 60 or over, well above the London average. Care assistants are the backbone of this work, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Alongside its care homes, London runs one of the country’s largest supported-living sectors, and the capital’s councils are moving people out of hospital and residential care into homes of their own under the national Building the Right Support programme. That drives steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, across all 32 boroughs and the City.

        Dementia care

Dementia diagnosis in London is something of a postcode lottery: while the capital’s overall diagnosis rate is among the highest in England, many boroughs still fall short of the NHS national target of diagnosing two-thirds of people. As the population ages, dementia is one of the biggest drivers of demand in London’s care homes, and it is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

London has a genuine specialist neuro cluster — the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney, one of the country’s oldest neuro-disability hospitals; the regional hyper-acute rehabilitation unit at Northwick Park, which takes the most complex brain-injury referrals from across London and the surrounding counties; and Homerton’s regional neurological rehabilitation unit in east London. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain or spinal injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
