Nursing in Merseyside
Straight talk, quick booking and pay you can count on, whether you are in Liverpool, St Helens or on the Sefton coast.
You choose where and when you work. Fancy a run of shifts near home in Bootle or Huyton one week, then something different over on the Wirral the next? Open the app, see what is live across the city region, and book the ones that suit you. No pressure to travel further than you want to.
You see the rate before you accept a shift, not after. Every booking shows the pay clearly in the app, so there are no surprises and no chasing. We keep payroll simple and on time, because being messed about with money is the fastest way to lose good nurses.
We help you get your DBS, mandatory training, references and revalidation paperwork sorted once, then keep it current so you are ready for any setting, from an NHS ward to a nursing home. Our team does the chasing so you can focus on the work.
The area we cover
Merseyside packs a lot of NHS care into a compact, densely populated county, from the Cheshire and Merseyside major trauma centre at Aintree to nationally significant units like Alder Hey, the Walton Centre and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
Most acute hospital care in the county runs through three big NHS employers. The NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group brings together the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Aintree University Hospital in Fazakerley, which is the single receiving site for adult major trauma across Cheshire and Merseyside and has its own helipad and Urgent Care and Trauma Centre. On the peninsula, Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs Arrowe Park Hospital in Upton along with the Clatterbridge Hospital site. To the east and north, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, formed in 2023, runs Whiston Hospital, home to the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit, plus St Helens Hospital and the Southport and Formby District General. Alongside these sit some of the best known specialist units in the North West: Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in West Derby, the Walton Centre for neurology and neurosurgery, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, which treats patients across Liverpool, Wirral and Aintree.
Community and mental health services across the county are led by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, which supports well over a million people across Merseyside and parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. Mersey Care also runs Ashworth High Secure Hospital in Maghull, one of only three high secure psychiatric hospitals in England and Wales, along with medium and low secure units, community forensic teams and mental health care inside local prisons. Merseyside has two working prisons, HMP Liverpool in Walton and the privately run HMP Altcourse in Fazakerley, both of which need healthcare staff. The independent sector adds theatre and ward work too, with Spire Liverpool Hospital on Greenbank Road running four operating theatres, and the Sefton Suite private unit sitting on the Aintree site. On top of all this, district nursing, care homes and domiciliary teams keep a large and ageing population supported at home right across the five boroughs.
Where we work
Across all five boroughs, in the NHS, the independent sector, care homes and the community.

Nursing and residential homes and community teams throughout Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and the Wirral, including the busy older-person and dementia settings along the Southport, Formby and Crosby coast.
Mental health, learning disability and secure work linked to Mersey Care services, from community and inpatient units to the forensic and high secure environment at Ashworth in Maghull.
Liverpool, Bootle, Southport, Crosby, St Helens, Prescot, Huyton, Kirkby, Birkenhead, Wallasey and Bebington are all well within reach.

Specialisms in Merseyside
Whatever your specialism, from major trauma at Aintree to the secure wards at Ashworth in Maghull, there is Merseyside work to match it.
Merseyside has hundreds of CQC-registered care and nursing homes, and demand is strong in the boroughs with older age profiles. Sefton in particular, with coastal towns like Southport, Formby and Crosby, has some of the oldest populations in the city region, which keeps nursing-home and dementia-care shifts steady year round. We book RGNs and RMNs into homes across all five boroughs, as well as healthcare assistants and support workers.

Mental health work across the county is anchored by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs community teams, acute inpatient wards and specialist services for more than a million people. If you are an RMN, there is a broad range of settings here, from crisis and community roles to inpatient units, plus the secure and forensic services at Ashworth in Maghull that make Merseyside a national centre for this kind of care.

Merseyside genuinely has prison healthcare on its doorstep. HMP Liverpool in Walton is one of the oldest and largest prisons in the North West, and HMP Altcourse in Fazakerley is a large privately operated Category B site. Both rely on nurses for primary care, mental health and substance-misuse work, and Mersey Care provides mental health services into local prisons, so there is regular demand for staff comfortable in secure environments.

For critical care and acute nurses, Aintree University Hospital is the receiving major trauma centre for the whole of Cheshire and Merseyside, with critical care built into its Urgent Care and Trauma Centre. Add the ITU and HDU capacity at the Royal Liverpool, Arrowe Park and Whiston, the specialist critical care at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and the Walton Centre, and the burns intensive care at Whiston, and there is plenty of high-acuity work for experienced staff.

Theatre practitioners, scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses are always in demand here. NHS lists run across the acute trusts, and Whiston is home to the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit. In the independent sector, Spire Liverpool Hospital on Greenbank Road runs four operating theatres, including laminar-flow theatres used mainly for orthopaedics, so there is scheduled surgical work alongside the NHS.

Care & support work in Merseyside
Most care across Merseyside is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Merseyside’s five councils — Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Wirral — between them commission adult social care for a population of around 1.4 million, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
In Sefton — which takes in the coastal towns of Southport, Formby and Crosby — nearly a quarter of residents are aged 65 or over, one of the oldest populations in the city region and well above the England average of around 18%. The borough has close to 90 registered care homes for older people, so demand stays steady year round. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Across Merseyside, support for people with learning disabilities, autism and physical disabilities is steadily moving out of residential settings and into supported living, in line with the national Building the Right Support programme. Support workers are at the heart of this: they help the people they support live as independently as possible in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting, and that shift keeps demand steady across all five boroughs.

Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, and demand for it is growing as Merseyside’s population ages. In older boroughs like Sefton, where the number of residents aged 65 and over rose by more than 13% in the decade to 2021, more and more older people are living with dementia. This work supports residents to keep living well day to day, with familiar routines and real companionship.

Merseyside has a genuine specialist brain-injury cluster. Brainkind’s Redford Court in Liverpool (Birt Close, L8) is a neuro-rehabilitation centre for people with acquired brain injuries, offering around 29 places across studio apartments, independent-living flats and its Lodge, and rated ‘Good’ by the CQC. Mersey Care provides further brain-injury rehabilitation locally too. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
