What is a NICU Nurse?
A NICU nurse, or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse, is a registered nurse (RN) who specialises in caring for newborn infants who are ill or born prematurely.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a specialised unit within a hospital that provides intensive medical care for newborns with various health conditions, including premature birth, low birth weight, congenital abnormalities, infections, and other complications.
NICU nurses play a crucial role in monitoring the health of these fragile infants, administering medications, providing specialised feeding assistance, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals.
They work closely with neonatologists, paediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcomes for the newborns in their care.
The NICU environment can be emotionally challenging, as nurses often work with families who may be experiencing stress and anxiety due to their baby’s health concerns.
NICU nurses provide support, education, and guidance to parents, helping them understand their baby’s condition and participate in their care.
