The county we cover
England’s largest county is a mix of busy city hospitals, market-town units and deeply rural community care.
Acute care across the county is shared between three NHS trusts. York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the emergency departments at York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital, along with community hospitals at Malton and New Selby War Memorial, and opened a new £47 million Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital in May 2025. Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust runs Harrogate District Hospital, which has its own 24 hour emergency department, along with Ripon Community Hospital, where urgent care is handled through an urgent treatment centre rather than a full A&E. The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, part of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has a 24 hour urgent treatment centre and is that trust’s main site for planned orthopaedic surgery, now home to a £35.5 million surgical centre. North Yorkshire does not have a major trauma centre of its own, so the most serious cases are taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, the regional major trauma centre, or south to Leeds General Infirmary.
Mental health and learning disability services are led by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, which covers North Yorkshire, York and Selby. Its sites include Foss Park Hospital in York, a 72 bed inpatient hospital that opened in 2020 to replace Bootham Park, and Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough, which serves Whitby, Ryedale and Scarborough. Community nursing reaches a long way in a county this rural, with district teams working out across the Dales, the Moors and the market towns. On the secure side, HMP and YOI Askham Grange near York is a women’s open prison with a mother and baby unit, while the high security estate sits just over the border at Full Sutton, a Category A men’s prison near Pocklington in the East Riding. The independent sector adds theatre and elective work, led by Nuffield Health York Hospital and Clifton Park Hospital in York and The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate.

Specialisms in North Yorkshire
From the acute wards at York and Scarborough to the Friarage at Northallerton and the independent theatres in Harrogate, there is likely work for your skills across North Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire has an older population than most of England, with around a quarter of residents aged over 65 according to the council’s 2023 to 2024 market sustainability plan, which lists roughly 166 registered care homes and almost 6,000 registered beds for over 65s. Occupancy runs high and the county has felt the national nursing shortage keenly, so experienced nursing home and care home staff are always in demand, from Harrogate and Ripon to the coastal towns.

Mental health work across the county is centred on Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, which provides adult, older people’s, children’s and forensic services for North Yorkshire, York and Selby. Its inpatient sites include the 72 bed Foss Park Hospital in York, which opened in 2020, and Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough. If you have RMN experience or work as a mental health support worker, there is regular shift work here.

Prison and secure healthcare is a smaller part of the picture in North Yorkshire than in some counties. The main prison inside the county is HMP and YOI Askham Grange near York, a women’s open prison with one of only a handful of mother and baby units in the country, while the high security men’s estate sits just over the boundary at Full Sutton in the East Riding. Alongside this, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys runs forensic and secure mental health services, so there is scope for nurses drawn to secure and forensic settings.

Critical care and emergency work sits mainly in the emergency departments and intensive care units at York Hospital and Scarborough Hospital, with a further 24 hour emergency department at Harrogate District Hospital. There is no major trauma centre within North Yorkshire itself, so the most serious trauma is taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, the regional major trauma centre, or south to Leeds General Infirmary. ITU, HDU and A&E experienced nurses are valued across the county’s acute sites.

Theatre and elective work spans the NHS and the independent sector. The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton is a main site for planned orthopaedic surgery, while York and Scarborough carry a broad surgical list. On the private side, Nuffield Health York Hospital and Clifton Park Hospital in York and The Duchy Hospital in Harrogate, with their laminar flow theatres, take scrub, recovery and anaesthetic nurses and ODPs.

Care & support work in North Yorkshire
Most care in North Yorkshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The county has roughly 200 care homes and more than 200 supported living properties, alongside a nationally recognised programme of extra-care schemes, and North Yorkshire Council — the largest council in England by area — is one of the country’s biggest unitary social care authorities. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
North Yorkshire has around 166 older people’s care homes with almost 6,000 registered beds, and roughly a quarter of residents in the county are already aged over 65 — a share the council expects to reach almost a third by 2035. Demand is heaviest in the market towns and along the coast, from Harrogate and Ripon to Scarborough and Whitby. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

North Yorkshire Council supports more than 800 people in over 200 supported living properties, and around 1,440 working-age adults with a learning disability draw on its adult social care. The council’s learning disability approach is built around helping people live as independently as possible, which means steady demand for support workers who back the people they support in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

An estimated 10,000 people in North Yorkshire are living with dementia, and at the last count only around 5,800 of them had a formal diagnosis — a wide gap that local memory and dementia services are working to close. With the county’s older population set to grow toward almost a third of residents by 2035, demand for skilled dementia care keeps rising. It is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

North Yorkshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence — Brainkind’s Neurological Centre on Bishopthorpe Road in York, a purpose-built independent hospital providing post-acute assessment and rehabilitation for people with an acquired brain injury, alongside Headway York’s community brain-injury service. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
