Nursing in Northamptonshire
Local shifts, honest pay and compliance that does not drag on. Here is what you get.
Northamptonshire is a big, spread out county, so we try to keep your travel sensible. You might pick up shifts at a care home in Corby one week and a community setting near Wellingborough or Daventry the next, without a long drive across the county each time.
You see the rate for every shift before you accept it, with no guessing and no surprises. The pay is confirmed in the app, and we get invoices and payments sorted quickly so you are not left chasing money for hours you have already worked.
Our team walks you through DBS, references, mandatory training and right to work, and keeps your file current so you stay ready to book. No last minute panics, no digging out the same certificate twice, just a clear checklist and someone to help.
The county we cover
Knowing who runs what locally helps you understand where the shifts come from. Here is the lie of the land across the county.
Northamptonshire’s acute care sits with two NHS trusts that work together as the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire group but remain separate organisations. Northampton General Hospital provides general acute services for West Northamptonshire and runs hyper acute stroke, vascular and renal services for the whole county, and it is an accredited cancer centre. Kettering General Hospital covers A&E, maternity and acute care for North Northamptonshire and part of south Leicestershire, and its Cardiac Centre provides cardiac services for the county. There is no major trauma centre within Northamptonshire, so the most seriously injured patients are taken to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Coventry or to Leicester, which shapes the kind of acute and emergency work you will find on the wards here.
Mental health and community services are led by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, known as NHFT, which runs inpatient mental health care at Berrywood Hospital in Northampton, including its acute wards and Marina psychiatric intensive care unit, and at St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, home to the Welland Centre with its Kingfisher, Avocet, Sandpiper and Shearwater wards. NHFT also delivers community nursing and therapy teams across the towns and villages. Northampton is also home to St Andrew’s Healthcare, a large independent mental health charity founded in 1838 and a well known local employer. On the prison side, HMP Five Wells opened at Wellingborough in 2022 as one of the largest jails in the country, run by G4S with prison healthcare provided by Practice Plus Group, and HMP Onley sits on the county’s western edge near Rugby, its land in the Northamptonshire parish of Barby though its postal address falls in Warwickshire. For planned surgery, the independent sector includes Three Shires Hospital in Northampton and Woodland Hospital in Kettering.
Where we work
Across acute, community and specialist settings, these are the areas we place nurses and HCAs into most.
The acute picture is anchored by Northampton General and Kettering General, and by independent hospitals such as Three Shires in Northampton and Woodland in Kettering for planned surgical lists. We support ward, department and theatre roles that keep these settings running.
Northamptonshire has a large and ageing residential care sector spread across Northampton, Kettering, Corby, Rushden and the surrounding villages, alongside NHFT community nursing teams. This is where a lot of our nursing and HCA work sits, in nursing homes and community settings.
From NHFT inpatient units at Berrywood Hospital in Northampton and St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, to independent mental health care with St Andrew’s Healthcare and prison healthcare at HMP Five Wells, there is steady demand for mental health nurses and support workers across the county.
We regularly place staff in Northampton, Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden, Daventry, Towcester, Brackley, Desborough and Burton Latimer.
Working across the border? We also cover the East Midlands, Leicestershire and Warwickshire.

Specialisms in Northamptonshire
Different settings need different skills. Here is where your experience fits across the county.
Care homes are the backbone of a lot of our Northamptonshire work. The county has a broad residential and nursing home sector serving an older population, from large purpose built homes in Northampton and Kettering to smaller settings in market towns like Oundle and Brackley and villages such as Brixworth, where the HC-One run Pytchley Court Nursing Home was rated outstanding by the CQC in November 2024. If you enjoy building relationships with residents, there is plenty of nursing and HCA work here.

Mental health nursing is a real strength of the local picture. NHFT runs acute and intensive care wards at Berrywood Hospital in Northampton and the Welland Centre at St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, alongside community mental health teams, while St Andrew’s Healthcare in Northampton is a major independent provider of specialist psychiatric care. If you are an RMN or an experienced support worker, this is a busy corner of the county.

Northamptonshire has a genuine prison presence. HMP Five Wells opened at Wellingborough in 2022 as a large category C resettlement prison run by G4S, with healthcare delivered by independent provider Practice Plus Group, and HMP Onley sits on the county’s western edge near Rugby, its land in the Northamptonshire parish of Barby though its postal address is in Warwickshire. Prison and secure environment nursing is a distinct kind of work, and for the right person it can be some of the most rewarding on our books.

Critical care and acute work here centres on Northampton General and Kettering General. Northampton General runs the county’s hyper acute stroke, vascular and renal services, so there is demand for experienced acute and ITU nurses. Bear in mind there is no major trauma centre in the county, so the most serious cases are transferred to Coventry or Leicester, which shapes the acute caseload locally.

Theatre and surgical roles run across both the NHS and the independent sector. Northampton General and Kettering General handle NHS surgical lists, while Three Shires Hospital in Northampton, part of Circle Health Group and equipped with its own theatres, and Woodland Hospital in Kettering, run by Ramsay Health Care and well known for orthopaedic work with ultra clean air theatres, provide planned surgery. Scrub, recovery and anaesthetic practitioners are always in demand.

Care & support work in Northamptonshire
Most care in Northamptonshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Since 2021 the county’s adult social care has been run not by a single county council but by two unitary authorities — North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire — which together serve around 785,000 people and commission care across roughly 190 care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Northamptonshire has close to 190 care homes, most of them residential homes for older people alongside around 50 nursing homes. The county’s older population is growing fast: in both North and West Northamptonshire the number of people aged 65 and over rose by roughly 30% in the decade to 2021, well above the England average of 20%. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes — the HC-One run Pytchley Court Nursing Home in Brixworth was rated outstanding by the CQC — supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Both of Northamptonshire’s unitary councils, North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire, commission supported living for adults with learning disabilities and autism. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

Around half of Northamptonshire’s care homes — more than 90 of its roughly 190 registered homes — are set up to provide dementia care. Behind them, Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), the county’s community and mental health trust, runs the local memory assessment and dementia services from Northampton and Kettering out to the market towns. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Northampton is home to a large specialist neuropsychiatry service at St Andrew’s Healthcare, where more than 460 specialist staff work across 200-plus beds on a 140-acre campus, caring for people with acquired and traumatic brain injury, Huntington’s disease and other complex neurological conditions. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
