    Nursing in Northumberland

Northumberland’s healthcare is shaped by its geography, England’s most sparsely populated county, and the work reflects that.

Acute care across the county is led by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, twice rated outstanding by the CQC. Its emergency work is centred on the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at Cramlington, which opened in June 2015 as the first hospital in England purpose-built for emergency care, with A&E consultants on site around the clock. Alongside it, Wansbeck General in Ashington and Hexham General handle planned and general care, backed by community hospitals in Alnwick, Berwick, Blyth, Morpeth, Haltwhistle and Rothbury. There is no major trauma centre within the county itself, so the most serious cases route south to the Great North Trauma Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, the region’s level one centre for the Northern Trauma Network.

Mental health care comes from Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, whose main Northumberland base is St George’s Park in Morpeth, home to acute admission, older people’s and mother and baby inpatient wards, including the Beadnell mother and baby unit. HMP Northumberland at Acklington, a large category C men’s prison near Morpeth run under contract by Sodexo, brings a steady stream of secure healthcare work. Add a big independent care sector serving an ageing rural population, community and district nursing that covers long distances, and private surgical work at the Newcastle hospitals just over the border, and the range of nursing here is genuinely wide.

        Nursing & care homes

Northumberland has one of the oldest and most rural populations in England, and its care sector reflects that. The county council’s adult social care was rated good by the CQC in 2024, and its nursing and residential homes keep steady demand for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff. With the county’s over 85 population projected to rise by around 80 per cent by 2043, that demand is only growing, and much of it is close to home.

        Mental health

Mental health services come from Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, and its main hub in the county is St George’s Park in Morpeth, with acute admission, older people’s and mother and baby inpatient units. Mental health is a growing area of work for us, across inpatient, community and crisis settings.

        Prison nursing

        Critical care

The county has no major trauma centre of its own, so the sickest patients travel to the Great North Trauma Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Closer to home, the emergency hospital at Cramlington runs critical care, so for confident ITU and HDU nurses there are regular high-acuity shifts across the region.

        Theatres

Alongside NHS lists at the Northumbria trust sites, much of the independent surgical work sits just over the border on Tyneside, at hospitals such as Nuffield Health Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Ramsay Cobalt Hospital. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, theatre work is regular and within reach.

Care & support work in Northumberland

Care and support work in Northumberland

Most care in Northumberland is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The county has a large independent care sector serving one of the oldest and most rural populations in England, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Northumberland County Council even runs some of its supported living services directly rather than only commissioning them out. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Northumberland has around 90 registered care homes — roughly 60 residential homes and another 30 or so nursing homes — spread from Cramlington and Ashington in the south east to the market towns of the rural north. It is one of the oldest counties in England, and the number of residents aged over 85 is projected to rise by around 80 per cent by 2043, so demand for care staff is climbing. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Alongside its care homes, Northumberland has a growing supported-living sector for disabled people, and unusually the county council operates some of these services itself rather than only commissioning them out. Its 2024 Extra Care and Supported Living Strategy sets out expanding supported living for people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health conditions. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

An estimated 5,400 people aged 65 and over were living with dementia in Northumberland in late 2023, a number set to keep rising as the county’s older population grows. Northumberland has published a ten-year dementia strategy for 2025 to 2035, and more than 60 of its care homes provide specialist dementia care. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

Northumberland has a genuine brain-injury cluster — Brainkind’s 25-bed Jane Percy House in Cramlington, rated outstanding by the CQC for acquired brain injury and complex neurological conditions, the NHS Northumberland Head Injuries Service based in Morpeth, and Headway Northumberland running support across Hexham, Alnwick, Berwick, Morpeth and Ashington. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
