The county we cover
Nottinghamshire’s healthcare runs from one of the largest teaching trusts in the country to district hospitals, high secure units and hundreds of care homes.
The county’s acute care is led by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the largest acute trusts in England, serving around 2.5 million people. Its Queen’s Medical Centre is the designated East Midlands Major Trauma Centre and also home to the Nottingham Children’s Hospital, while Nottingham City Hospital is home to the Trent Cardiac Centre, a regional cardiac centre of excellence, alongside the trust’s cancer and respiratory services. To the north, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs King’s Mill Hospital at Sutton-in-Ashfield, rated Outstanding by the CQC in 2020, along with Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital. Between them these trusts handle everything from major trauma and emergency work to planned surgery, so band 5 and band 6 nurses find shifts in almost every specialty.
Mental health and community care are run by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, one of the biggest forensic providers in the NHS, working from more than 120 sites. It runs Rampton Hospital near Retford, one of only three high secure hospitals in England, along with Highbury Hospital in Bulwell, Sherwood Oaks Hospital and older people’s units such as Blossomwood. The county also holds four prisons that all rely on healthcare teams: HMP Nottingham and HMP Lowdham Grange, both Category B, plus HMP Ranby near Retford and HMP Whatton near Bingham. On the independent side, The Park Hospital in Sherwood, Woodthorpe Hospital and Spire Nottingham at Tollerton all run theatre lists, and a large community and district nursing workforce supports people in their homes across the county.
Where we work
From the city out to the market towns, we place nurses and carers wherever the shifts come up.
Nottinghamshire’s hospital and theatre work spans NHS sites such as Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital in the city, plus King’s Mill and Newark to the north, alongside independent theatres at The Park, Woodthorpe and Spire Nottingham. Nottinghamshire has a large older population, so nursing and residential homes across Mansfield, Ashfield, Rushcliffe and Bassetlaw need registered nurses and carers year round. We also place staff for community and district nursing work across the county.
From Highbury Hospital and Sherwood Oaks to high secure work at Rampton and healthcare inside the county’s prisons, there is steady demand for mental health nurses, RMNs and support workers with the right experience.
We cover Nottingham, Mansfield, Worksop, Newark-on-Trent, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Retford, Arnold, Beeston, West Bridgford, Hucknall and the towns and villages in between.

Specialisms in Nottinghamshire
Whatever your background, there is likely a setting near you that needs it.
Nottinghamshire has an older-than-average population, with more than a fifth of residents aged 65 or over (2024/25), and the county council spent over 387 million pounds on adult social care that year. Thousands of people rely on CQC-registered nursing and residential homes across the county, which means steady work for nurses and carers in older people’s and dementia care, from Rushcliffe in the south to Bassetlaw in the north.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust runs mental health services across the county, including Highbury Hospital in Bulwell, Sherwood Oaks Hospital and older people’s units such as Blossomwood. Its forensic services are among the largest in the NHS, so mental health nurses and support workers are in regular demand across acute, community and secure settings.

Nottinghamshire has four prisons, all of which rely on healthcare teams: HMP Nottingham and HMP Lowdham Grange, both Category B, HMP Ranby near Retford and HMP Whatton near Bingham, which is one of the largest prisons for adult male sex offenders in Europe. Prison healthcare suits nurses who are calm, independent and confident working in a secure environment.

Queen’s Medical Centre is the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, taking the region’s most serious injuries, and Nottingham City Hospital runs critical care alongside its cardiac and cancer services. King’s Mill Hospital also has intensive care. Experienced ITU, HDU and critical care nurses find their skills are always needed in a county like this.

Theatre work comes from both sides. The NHS runs lists at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital, King’s Mill and Newark, while The Park Hospital in Sherwood, Woodthorpe Hospital and Spire Nottingham at Tollerton all run independent theatres. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses are consistently sought after across settings like these.

Care & support work in Nottinghamshire
Most care in Nottinghamshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Nottinghamshire County Council runs a large adult social care operation, spending over 387 million pounds a year, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist brain-injury rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Nottinghamshire has around 331 care homes, the great majority of them residential rather than nursing, and more than a fifth of the county’s residents are aged 65 or over. Demand is steady across Mansfield, Ashfield and the market towns around Newark. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Nottinghamshire County Council commissions supported living across every district in the county, from Mansfield and Ashfield to Rushcliffe and Bassetlaw, helping people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions live in their own homes rather than in a care-home setting. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in residential care.

Around 173 of Nottinghamshire’s care homes are registered to provide dementia care, more than half of all the homes in the county, reflecting an older-than-average population that keeps demand high from Rushcliffe in the south to Bassetlaw in the north. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Nottinghamshire has a genuine brain-injury offer — Headway Nottingham provides long-term, non-clinical rehabilitation and support for people affected by brain injury across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and the Nottingham Brain Injury and Neurological Care Centre at Hucknall provides specialist residential neurological care and rehabilitation. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
