The work
One registration, three roles
Operating department practice is the most versatile registration in theatre.
As an ODP you can work across the whole perioperative journey. In anaesthetics you check the machine, prepare the airway kit and support induction. In scrub you hold the sterile field, manage the instruments and keep the count. In recovery you take over a patient with an airway, bring them round safely and hand them back to the ward. Few registrations let you move between all three, and it makes ODPs some of the most valuable people in any theatre suite.

What you’ll need
Your HCPC registration
A current HCPC registration as an operating department practitioner, in good standing.
Theatre competencies
Recent experience in at least one phase, whether anaesthetics, scrub or recovery, plus standard NHS-level compliance.
The right approach
Adaptable, precise and calm under pressure. Comfortable walking into a new theatre suite and contributing from the first case.
