The county we cover
From the teaching hospitals in Oxford to the general hospital serving the north of the county, here is the ground we cover.
Acute care in the county is led by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs four hospitals. The John Radcliffe in Headington is the largest, home to the Thames Valley Major Trauma Centre as well as the Oxford Children’s Hospital, the Oxford Eye Hospital and the Oxford Heart Centre. The Churchill Hospital, on the same side of the city, handles cancer, renal and transplant services, while the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a national name in orthopaedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation. To the north, the Horton General Hospital in Banbury looks after that end of the county. That mix means nursing work here ranges from major trauma and critical care through to specialist oncology and elective orthopaedics.
Mental health and community services sit with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. The Warneford Hospital in Oxford holds adult and adolescent mental health wards, including the Meadow and Highfield CAMHS units, and the Littlemore Mental Health Centre is home to the Oxford Clinic medium secure forensic service and the Thames House low secure wards. The same trust runs district nursing and community teams across the county and provides healthcare inside its prisons. There are two: HMP Bullingdon near Bicester, a Category C prison that also holds remand prisoners, and HMP Huntercombe near Nuffield, which holds foreign national men. On the independent side, Nuffield Health’s The Manor Hospital in Headington covers private elective surgery and diagnostics. Add a large network of care and nursing homes, and there is steady work across every setting.

Specialisms in Oxfordshire
Whatever your speciality, there is likely work for it here.
Oxfordshire has an ageing population. The number of residents aged 65 and over grew by around 25 per cent between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, and older people made up roughly 18 per cent of the county in the 2023 mid-year estimates. That is felt most in the rural districts like West and South Oxfordshire, where the care and nursing home sector is busy. We place healthcare assistants and nurses into residential and nursing homes from Oxford out to Henley-on-Thames, Chipping Norton and Wantage.

Mental health work across the county runs through Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. The Warneford Hospital in Oxford holds adult, older-adult and adolescent wards, including the Meadow psychiatric intensive care unit and the Highfield adolescent unit, and the Littlemore Mental Health Centre in Oxford runs both forensic and general mental health services. We cover RMN and support-worker shifts across these kinds of settings.

Oxfordshire has two prisons, and healthcare inside them is provided through the NHS. HMP Bullingdon, near Bicester, is a Category C prison that also serves as a local remand prison, and HMP Huntercombe, near Nuffield in the south of the county, holds convicted foreign national men. Prison healthcare covers primary care, mental health and substance misuse, and we support nurses working in these secure settings.

The John Radcliffe in Headington is the Major Trauma Centre for the whole of the Thames Valley, with a purpose-built trauma unit sitting alongside its critical care unit. Between the John Radcliffe and the Churchill, Oxford also carries tertiary cancer, cardiac, renal and neurosciences work. If you have ITU, HDU, ED or theatre recovery experience, this is one of the strongest parts of the region for critical care.

Surgical work spans the NHS and the independent sector. The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a national orthopaedic hospital, the John Radcliffe and Churchill run general, cancer and transplant surgery, and the Horton General covers the north of the county. Nuffield Health’s The Manor Hospital in Headington handles private elective lists. We place scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioners across all of these.

Care & support work in Oxfordshire
Most care in Oxfordshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Oxfordshire County Council is the county’s adult social care authority, and the work spans more than 130 care homes, supported living for adults with learning disabilities and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Oxfordshire has more than 130 registered care homes — around 80 of them nursing homes and 54 residential — and the large majority care for older people. Demand is heaviest in the rural districts: across the county the number of residents aged 65 and over rose by roughly a quarter between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, and it is felt most in West and South Oxfordshire where the population skews oldest. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Alongside its care homes, Oxfordshire has a strong supported-living sector for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Style Acre, an Oxfordshire charity based in Wallingford and an approved provider to Oxfordshire County Council, now supports around 275 people across the county — up from just 20 in 2004 — through supported-living households and community hubs in Wallingford, Didcot and Banbury. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

Dementia is central to elderly care across Oxfordshire: of the county’s 130-plus care homes, around 110 provide dementia care. Support for people with dementia and their families is coordinated through Dementia Oxfordshire, a countywide service run by Age UK Oxfordshire, and as the county’s older population keeps growing the need rises with it. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Oxfordshire has a genuine specialist neuro-rehabilitation centre — the Oxford Centre for Enablement on the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre site in Headington, a purpose-built rehabilitation unit whose neurological rehabilitation inpatient service takes people recovering from brain injury and other disabling neurological conditions. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain or spinal injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
