The work

PICU nursing is high-stakes, one-to-one work at the most critical moments of a child’s life.
In PICU you care for children who are seriously unwell, often ventilated, on inotropes and multiple infusions, where everything is calculated to the child’s weight and nothing has any margin for error. You read the monitors and the child together, escalate the moment the picture changes, and manage the airway, the lines and the drugs with total precision. Children compensate and then crash quickly, so vigilance is the job.
And through it all you hold the family. Parents watch every number, and your calm becomes theirs. Getting started
What you’ll need
Your NMC registration
A current NMC PIN as a registered nurse, in good standing, ideally a registered children’s nurse.
Paediatric critical care experience
Recent PICU or paediatric high dependency experience, confident with ventilation, inotropes and weight-based prescribing, plus an enhanced DBS.
The right temperament
Calm, precise and decisive. PICU rewards nurses who hold their nerve when a child is critically unwell and keep families steady while they do it.
