The work
The first face patients see after surgery
Recovery nursing is one-to-one vigilance at the most vulnerable point of the surgical journey.
In recovery you take over a patient who may still have an airway in, and everything that happens next is down to your assessment. You manage airways and oxygen, watch the monitors and the patient in equal measure, control pain and nausea, and spot the complication early, whether that is a bleed, an obstructed airway or a patient who is slow to wake. Then, when they are stable and comfortable, you hand them back to the ward and take the next one.
It suits nurses and ODPs who like focused, one-to-one clinical work with clear moments of judgement. Every patient is a fresh assessment, every list a different mix of surgery. Getting started
What you’ll need
Your registration
A live NMC registration as a nurse or HCPC registration as an ODP, in good standing.
Recovery experience
Recent PACU or recovery experience, confident with airway management, monitoring and post-anaesthetic assessment.
The right temperament
Watchful, reassuring and decisive. Recovery rewards practitioners who spot the subtle change before it becomes a problem.
