What is a Scrub Nurse?
A scrub nurse, also known as a perioperative nurse or surgical nurse, is a specialised registered nurse who plays a critical role in the operating room (OR) during surgical procedures.
Their primary responsibility is to maintain a sterile environment within the surgical suite and assist the surgical team before, during, and after surgery. Here are the key responsibilities and roles of a scrub nurse:
Sterile Preparation
Scrub nurses are responsible for preparing the operating room by ensuring that all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment are sterile and ready for use. They set up the sterile field where the surgeon and other team members will work.Assisting Surgeons
During surgery, scrub nurses pass sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants as needed. They anticipate the surgeon’s needs and maintain a clear and organized sterile field.Instrument Handling
Scrub nurses have an extensive knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment. They handle instruments with care, maintain instrument counts, and account for all items used during the procedure to prevent foreign body retention.Surgical Attire
Scrub nurses wear sterile attire, including gowns and gloves, to maintain aseptic conditions in the OR. They assist other members of the surgical team in donning sterile attire.Patient Positioning
They assist in positioning the patient on the operating table and ensure that the patient is comfortable and safely secured.Documentation
Scrub nurses document important information related to the surgery, such as the names and quantities of instruments used, medications administered, and other relevant details.Patient Safety
They monitor the patient’s vital signs and well-being throughout the surgery, alerting the anesthesia provider or surgeon if any concerns arise.Infection Control
Scrub nurses are vigilant about maintaining a sterile environment, including ensuring that all team members follow proper hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.Communication
Effective communication with other members of the surgical team is essential. Scrub nurses coordinate with the circulating nurse, surgeon, anesthesia provider, and other team members to ensure a smooth and safe surgery.Emergency Response
They are trained to respond quickly and efficiently to any unexpected events or emergencies during surgery, such as excessive bleeding or adverse reactions to anesthesia.Postoperative Care
After surgery, scrub nurses assist in wound closure, dressing application, and the transfer of the patient to the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU). They may also participate in the counting of surgical instruments and supplies to ensure nothing is left inside the patient.
Scrub nurses work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals in the OR, including surgeons, anaesthesia providers, circulating nurses, and surgical technologists. They are highly skilled and well-trained healthcare professionals who play a crucial role in maintaining patient safety and ensuring the success of surgical procedures. Scrub nurses are employed in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, surgical centers, and outpatient clinics, where surgical procedures are performed.
