ITU & A&E Nurse Jobs at Ashford and St Peter’s, Surrey (Now Hiring)

Looking for ITU or A&E nurse jobs in Surrey? Novello has agency shifts available now in and around Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with your confirmed rate shown in the app before you accept, and a team that gets you compliant fast. If you are an experienced emergency or critical care RGN in Chertsey, Woking, Weybridge, Staines or Ashford, we would love to hear from you today. And if you are weighing up a move into agency work, everything you need is below: where the shifts are, what the work involves, what it pays and what the trust actually runs where.

Where we have ITU and A&E jobs right now

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of more than 410,000 across Runnymede, Spelthorne, Woking and parts of Elmbridge, with St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey drawing from Woking, Weybridge, Chertsey, Staines and Walton-on-Thames. That is a busy acute footprint, and it keeps emergency and critical care demand steady. We book across the trust and the wider county:

  • St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey — this is where the acute work sits. The 24-hour Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit are both here, alongside emergency surgery, maternity, paediatrics and a neonatal unit. If you want A&E or ITU shifts with the trust, St Peter’s is the site.
  • Ashford Hospital, Ashford — the trust’s sister site handles planned and day-case work plus an Urgent Treatment Centre. There is no A&E here, but it is part of the same trust and part of the wider picture across Surrey.
  • Across Surrey — critical care in the county concentrates at St Peter’s in Chertsey, Frimley Park and East Surrey in Redhill, so ITU, HDU and recovery experience travels well. We also cover A&E and acute wards countywide, from Woking and Weybridge through to Staines and Guildford.
  • Nearby counties — plenty of Surrey-based nurses pick up shifts just over the border, so it is worth registering if you can travel to Hampshire, Berkshire, West Sussex or London.

Working somewhere else? Register anyway — we book A&E and ITU shifts nationwide, and new work comes on all the time. Sign up in minutes or call 0333 307 8897 and tell us where you are.

What the work involves

The A&E and ITU roles at St Peter’s are different jobs, so it is worth being clear about both.

A&E nursing at St Peter’s means working in a department that covers all major specialties and includes 24-hour cardio-pulmonary and major trauma resuscitation, with its own x-ray facilities, a trauma team, a counselling service and a dedicated paediatric A&E in the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre. Day to day the role is triage and rapid assessment, treatment and monitoring, and crisis and resuscitation work across trauma, cardiac and paediatric emergencies. A quick note on trauma: St Peter’s does trauma resuscitation, but Surrey has no major trauma centre, so the most seriously injured are stabilised and transferred on to St George’s in Tooting. It is a busy general emergency department, not a major trauma centre.

ITU nursing at St Peter’s means caring for the sickest patients, often one to one. The unit provides Level 2 and Level 3 care, admits acute cases directly from the Emergency Department, takes general medical and surgical patients, and delivers renal replacement therapy. You will be managing ventilated and sedated patients, titrating vasoactive and inotropic drugs, running invasive monitoring and arterial blood gases, and working closely with intensivists. It is high-acuity work that rewards nurses who stay composed and decisive.

Who you would work for

Your shifts sit within Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of Surrey’s main acute providers. As an agency nurse you slot into the existing ED or ITU team on a shift basis, working alongside the trust’s nurses, doctors and intensivists. Novello was born out of a passion to protect NHS agency workers, and our team is rewarded on quality and compliance, not sales — so the focus is on getting you booked into the right shifts, not pushing you into the wrong ones.

What you need

  • NMC registration — a valid NMC PIN as a registered adult nurse (RGN), with the English competence and safe-practice standards the NMC requires.
  • Relevant experience. For A&E shifts you need recent emergency department experience. For ITU shifts, critical care experience is essential — recent time in ITU, ICU or HDU and the competencies that come with caring for ventilated, high-dependency patients at Level 2 and Level 3. Agency shifts are not the route in for nurses new to critical care; you are booked to be effective from day one.
  • Standard NHS compliance — mandatory training up to date, occupational health clearance and an enhanced DBS check.
  • The right temperament — composed, confident and decisive under pressure. In emergency and intensive care it matters as much as clinical knowledge.

If you have the experience but your compliance file needs pulling together, that is exactly what our team helps with — you can be compliant in as little as 24 hours. See how A&E jobs work on our specialism page.

What it pays

In the NHS, nurses are paid on the Agenda for Change system, typically starting at Band 5, with emergency and critical care specialism usually following general experience and further competencies. On the agency side, rates vary by role, shift and how unsocial the hours are — vague promises help nobody, so we do not deal in them. With Novello, your confirmed rate is shown in the app before you accept a shift, so you always know exactly what a booking pays. Days, nights and weekends are available, on PAYE or umbrella.

Is agency A&E or ITU work right for you?

Here are the straight answers. Agency work gives you control over when and where you work, and with the app you manage your own compliance, availability and bookings in one place. The trade-off is that you are expected to hit the ground running — there is no long induction, so you need current experience in the setting you are booking into. Emergency and intensive care are demanding by nature: high acuity, unpredictable flow and real decisions made quickly. Nurses who thrive tend to be the ones who like that pace and want the flexibility to shape their own week around it.

What makes it worth doing

Ask agency nurses what keeps them doing emergency and critical care and the answers are consistent: the clinical challenge, the flexibility and the transparency. You keep your skills sharp on genuinely acute work, you choose the shifts that fit your life, and with Novello there is transparency around pay and rewards — your rate is confirmed before you commit, and the team supporting you is measured on quality, not on how many shifts they can talk you into. For experienced Surrey nurses, it is a way to do the work you are good at, on your terms.

Common questions

Is the A&E at Ashford or St Peter’s?

St Peter’s, Chertsey. The trust runs its 24-hour Emergency Department and its Intensive Care Unit at St Peter’s. Ashford Hospital has an Urgent Treatment Centre and handles planned and day-case work, but there is no A&E there. If you are booking A&E or ITU shifts with the trust, they are at St Peter’s.

Do I need ITU experience for critical care shifts?

Yes. For ITU work you need recent time in ITU, ICU or HDU and the competencies that go with caring for ventilated, high-dependency patients at Level 2 and Level 3. Agency shifts are not the way into critical care for nurses new to it — you are booked to be effective straight away. The usual route in is a permanent or development post on a unit.

How quickly can I start?

Registration takes under 60 seconds, and with the right paperwork you can be compliant in as little as 24 hours. Once you are cleared, you browse and book A&E and ITU shifts in the app, with your confirmed rate shown before you accept.

What shifts and pay arrangements are available?

Days, nights and weekends, on PAYE or umbrella — whichever suits you. We do not quote a headline figure because rates vary by role and shift; instead your confirmed rate is shown in the app before you accept, so there are no surprises.
