The county we cover
Shropshire is one of England’s largest and most rural counties, and its healthcare stretches from the acute wards of the Royal Shrewsbury and the Princess Royal in Telford to a national orthopaedic centre at Gobowen and a string of small community hospitals.
Acute care in the county is anchored by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs two district general hospitals at opposite ends of the county: the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in the county town and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. The trust sits within the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin integrated care system and serves a population spread across a large rural area reaching to the Welsh border, so acute nursing here can mean anything from a busy emergency department to a long rural transfer. Independent surgery adds to the mix at the Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital on Longden Road.
Beyond the two district generals there is a distinctive spread of specialist and community work. At Gobowen near Oswestry, the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital is one of the country’s leading centres for orthopaedic and spinal surgery, drawing patients from well beyond Shropshire. Adult acute mental health inpatient care runs from the Redwoods Centre at Bicton Heath in Shrewsbury, provided by Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, while Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust runs community hospitals at Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Bishop’s Castle and Whitchurch and provides healthcare inside HMP Stoke Heath near Market Drayton. Add a large rural care market and community nursing across the hills, and the range of work here is genuinely wide.

Specialisms in Shropshire
Whatever you specialise in, from the orthopaedic theatres at Gobowen to the county’s rural care homes and HMP Stoke Heath, Shropshire has genuine demand. Here is where the work is.
Shropshire is one of England’s largest and most sparsely populated counties, and its care market is spread across market towns and villages, from Oswestry and Whitchurch in the north to Ludlow and Cleobury Mortimer in the south. That means steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff in nursing and residential homes, close to home.

Adult acute mental health inpatient care in Shropshire runs from the Redwoods Centre at Bicton Heath in Shrewsbury, provided by Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, whose Clee Building provides low secure forensic care. With community and crisis mental health teams working across a large rural county, there is regular work here for RMNs across inpatient, secure and community settings.

Shropshire’s secure estate centres on HMP and YOI Stoke Heath near Market Drayton, a category C adult male prison and young offender institution, where healthcare is provided by Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

Critical care in the county is concentrated at the two Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust sites, the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, which between them cover emergency, high dependency and intensive care for a large rural population reaching to the Welsh border. For ITU and HDU nurses confident with unstable patients, critical care shifts come up across both sites.

Theatre work in Shropshire spans NHS and specialist lists. The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Gobowen near Oswestry is a national orthopaedic and spinal centre with a heavy elective theatre programme, alongside the NHS lists at the Royal Shrewsbury and the Princess Royal and day-case surgery at the Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital on Longden Road. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, that means regular theatre work across the county.

Care & support work in Shropshire
Most care in Shropshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Shropshire has one of the oldest populations in England — a quarter of residents are aged 65 or over — and the work spans a large rural county, from older people’s homes in the market towns to supported living out in the community. Shropshire Council runs adult social care across one of England’s largest and most sparsely populated unitary areas, reaching from Oswestry and Whitchurch in the north to Ludlow and Cleobury Mortimer in the south. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Shropshire has one of the oldest populations in England: at the 2021 Census a quarter of residents (25.3%) were aged 65 or over and the county’s median age was 48, eight years above the England figure of 40, after the over-65 population grew by almost 30% in a single decade. That underpins a large rural care market — the Shrewsbury not-for-profit Coverage Care alone runs ten homes across the county’s market towns. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Alongside the care homes, much of Shropshire’s disability support is delivered in people’s own homes and out in the community across a large rural county. The Shrewsbury charity Bethphage, for example, supports more than 200 adults with learning disabilities and autism across Shropshire and the wider West Midlands, running supported living alongside day opportunities in Bridgnorth, Chelmarsh and Ellesmere. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

With around one Shropshire resident in thirty now aged 85 or over — the age group at highest risk of dementia — demand for dementia care is rising fastest in exactly the market towns where the population is oldest. Providers are responding: Coverage Care has opened an enhanced Bluebell Dementia Unit at Greenfields Care Home in Whitchurch, designed around residents’ wellbeing and comfort. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Learning-disability support in Shropshire is increasingly built around independence and community living rather than long-stay hospital care. Bethphage, based in Shrewsbury, specialises in Positive Behaviour Support and autism and works within the national Transforming Care drive to help people with a learning disability move out of hospital settings and into supported living in their own communities. Support workers here help the people they support build the skills, routines and confidence to run their own day-to-day lives.
