The county we cover
One trust runs almost everything clinical in Somerset, which shapes where the shifts are.
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust runs the county’s two acute hospitals, Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital, after Yeovil joined the trust on 1 April 2023. That built on the 2020 merger that first brought acute, community and mental health services together. Uniquely for an English county, a single trust now holds acute, community and mental health care plus a share of GP practices through its Symphony Healthcare Services arm. Both Musgrove Park and Yeovil run 24 hour emergency departments and intensive care and sit in the Severn Major Trauma Network as trauma units. The network’s major trauma centre is Southmead Hospital in Bristol, so the most serious cases are taken there rather than treated in the county, something worth knowing when you weigh up critical care work. Ceremonial Somerset also takes in the Royal United Hospitals Bath (the RUH), itself a trauma unit in the same network, and Weston General on the North Somerset coast.
Mental health in Somerset also sits inside Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Acute inpatient care runs from the Wellsprings Hospital site on Cheddon Road in Taunton, with Rydon wards 1 and 2, Pyrland wards 1 and 2 and Holford ward as the psychiatric intensive care unit, plus Rowan wards 1 and 2 at Summerlands in Yeovil, which absorbed the former St Andrews beds from Wells in 2024, and the Wessex House adolescent unit in Bridgwater, the first CAMHS inpatient unit in the South West to gain Royal College of Psychiatrists accreditation. Community mental health teams work from bases including Foundation House on Wellsprings Road in Taunton, alongside minor injury units at the community hospitals in Frome, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Chard, Bridgwater, Minehead and Burnham-on-Sea. There is no operating prison inside Somerset, as the old HMP Shepton Mallet closed in 2013, so secure work means forensic mental health here or the nearest estate over the borders. For theatre and elective work the independent sector centres on Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital, with the NHS-owned Sulis Hospital at Peasedown St John near Bath a short hop across the county line.

Specialisms in Somerset
Whatever your field, from theatres at Nuffield Health Taunton to the Holford intensive care unit at Wellsprings, there is a Somerset setting that needs it.
Somerset is an older county and getting older. The Somerset Provider Network counts around 112 care homes for older people with roughly 5,090 CQC-registered beds, and the council forecasts the over-65 population to rise by about 36 percent between 2023 and 2040, with the over-85s close to doubling. The same forecasts show the number of over-65s needing help with at least one self-care or domestic task rising by more than 40 percent by 2040. That mix keeps steady demand for nursing home and dementia care shifts in Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil and the market towns.

Mental health work is delivered by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, which folds acute, community and mental health into one organisation. Acute wards run from the Wellsprings Hospital site in Taunton, including Rydon 1 and 2, Pyrland 1 and 2 and the Holford psychiatric intensive care unit, with Rowan wards 1 and 2 at Summerlands in Yeovil, which took on the former St Andrews beds from Wells in 2024, and Wessex House for young people aged 13 to 18 in Bridgwater. Community mental health teams cover the county from bases including Foundation House on Wellsprings Road in Taunton.

Somerset has no operating prison. HMP Shepton Mallet, once the country’s oldest working jail, closed in 2013 and has not been replaced. Secure and forensic nursing in the county therefore sits within mental health, such as the Holford psychiatric intensive care unit at Wellsprings in Taunton, while the nearest prison estate lies over the borders at HMP Bristol, HMP Leyhill in Gloucestershire and HMP Erlestoke in Wiltshire. If prison nursing is your field, we can point you to those neighbouring sites.

Both Musgrove Park in Taunton and Yeovil District run intensive care and 24 hour emergency departments, and both act as trauma units within the Severn Major Trauma Network. The network’s major trauma centre is Southmead Hospital in Bristol, so the most complex trauma is stabilised locally and transferred there rather than managed in the county. For ITU, HDU and resus nurses that means steady acute and critical care work at Taunton and Yeovil, with the RUH Bath a further option at the county’s northern edge.

Theatre and recovery work spans the NHS lists at Musgrove Park and Yeovil District and the independent sector. Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital, open since 1974, runs three ultra clean air theatres covering orthopaedic and spinal surgery, ophthalmology and more, and was rated Good with outstanding leadership by the CQC in 2024. The Sulis Hospital near Bath adds further elective capacity just over the county line for scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses.

Care & support work in Somerset
Most care in Somerset is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Since April 2023 a single unitary authority, Somerset Council, has run adult social care across the whole historic county, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and learning-disability support in an ageing, largely rural county. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
The Somerset Provider Network counts around 112 care homes for older people across the county, with roughly 5,090 CQC-registered beds, and the council’s own forecasts show the number of over-65s needing help with at least one everyday self-care or domestic task rising by more than 40% by 2040. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship as demand climbs in Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil and the market towns.

Somerset Council actively promotes alternatives to residential care: its Shared Lives Scheme places disabled adults with approved local carers in ordinary family homes rather than care homes, and the council continues to commission supported living across the county’s towns. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

Dementia risk climbs steeply with age, and Somerset Council forecasts the county’s over-85 population will nearly double between 2023 and 2040, so demand for dementia care is set to rise sharply. Somerset has responded through local Dementia Action Alliances and a growing network of Dementia Friends, and dementia care remains some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Somerset is home to Discovery, a major learning-disability and autism support provider in the county and now part of the national not-for-profit Dimensions. Support workers here help the people they support — autistic people and people with learning disabilities — build skills and independence in supported living and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.
