Nursing in South Yorkshire
We keep it simple: real shifts near you, pay you can see before you say yes, and a team that sorts the paperwork so you can just turn up and nurse.
South Yorkshire is compact and well connected, so you are rarely far from work. We book shifts across Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and the Doncaster area, in hospital wards, theatres, care homes and community teams. Tell us how far you will travel and we will keep your list to settings you can actually reach, whether that is the Northern General in Sheffield or a nursing home out in the Dearne Valley.
You see the rate for every shift before you accept it, in the app, with no guessing and no surprises on the payslip. Nothing is hidden and there is no haggling after the fact. Accept a shift, work it, and get paid promptly through our own payroll.
Our compliance team keeps your NMC registration, mandatory training, DBS and references in order and flags anything before it lapses. That matters here, where large employers like Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and secure sites such as HMP Doncaster run strict pre-placement checks. We keep you cleared so a booking never falls through at the last minute.
The area we cover
South Yorkshire packs a lot of healthcare into a small metropolitan county, from one of the region’s biggest teaching hospitals to district generals in every borough. Here is who does what.
Sheffield anchors the county. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest trusts in the country, running the Northern General Hospital, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Centre, the Jessop Wing maternity unit and the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. The Northern General has been the adult Major Trauma Centre for South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire since 2012 and is home to the adult emergency department, a cardiothoracic centre and the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit, while the Royal Hallamshire holds the regional neurosciences service and a dedicated neuro intensive care unit. Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust runs Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which has been the region’s paediatric Major Trauma Centre since 2012, along with the Ryegate Children’s Centre. Beyond the city, each borough has its own acute trust: Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Barnsley, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust at Rotherham Hospital, and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough.
On the mental health and community side, Sheffield is served by Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, the trust renamed in September 2025 from Sheffield Health and Social Care, which runs the city’s inpatient wards, the Endcliffe psychiatric intensive care unit at the Longley Centre and low secure services at Forest Lodge. Rotherham, Doncaster and the surrounding area are covered by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, known as RDaSH, whose main inpatient site is Tickhill Road Hospital in Doncaster and whose forensic services include the low secure Amber Lodge. The Doncaster area is also the county’s prison cluster, and the independent sector adds surgical capacity through Thornbury Hospital and Spire Claremont Hospital, both in Sheffield. Community nursing, district teams and a large care-home sector fill out the picture across all four boroughs.
Where we work
Wherever you fit best, we have shifts. Our bookings span the county’s hospitals, its care and community services and its mental health and secure settings.
We place nurses and theatre staff across the county’s acute sites, from the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Rotherham Hospital and Barnsley Hospital, plus independent theatres at Thornbury and Spire Claremont. Ward nursing, recovery, scrub and ITU shifts all feature.
South Yorkshire has a large residential and nursing-home sector across Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and the Barnsley and Dearne Valley towns, alongside NHS district and community teams. We book nurses and healthcare assistants into elderly and dementia care, nursing homes and community nursing roles right across the county.
From the inpatient wards run by Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and RDaSH’s Tickhill Road Hospital to low secure and forensic units, we cover mental health nursing across South Yorkshire, including the healthcare teams that work inside the Doncaster-area prisons.
That means shifts in and around Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Mexborough, Wath upon Dearne, Maltby, Dinnington, Stocksbridge and Penistone.
Novello covers the wider region too. If you work across the county boundary, see our Yorkshire nursing agency page, or our neighbouring West Yorkshire and Derbyshire pages.
On the map
From Sheffield out to Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley, here is a snapshot of the settings across South Yorkshire where our nurses pick up shifts.
Specialisms in South Yorkshire
Whatever your background, there is likely a home for it here. These are the areas we book most across the county.
Older-people’s care is a big part of nursing in South Yorkshire, especially across the former mining towns of the Dearne and around Doncaster and Barnsley where the population is ageing. The Yorkshire and Humber region had around 2,700 registered residential care-home beds for every 100,000 people aged 65 and over as at April 2024, but nursing-home places across the region have fallen by roughly 21 per cent since 2014, so demand for registered nurses in homes is steady. We place nurses and carers into nursing homes, residential and dementia units across all four boroughs.

Mental health nursing runs deep here. Sheffield is served by Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, renamed in September 2025 from Sheffield Health and Social Care, covering acute wards, the Endcliffe psychiatric intensive care unit and low secure care at Forest Lodge. Rotherham, Doncaster and the surrounding area are covered by RDaSH, with its main inpatient base at Tickhill Road Hospital in Doncaster and forensic services including the low secure Amber Lodge. We book RMNs and support staff across these settings.

The Doncaster area is South Yorkshire’s prison cluster. HMP Doncaster is a large Category B local prison run by Serco, and just to the east, around Hatfield Woodhouse, sit HMP Moorland, HMP Lindholme and HMP Hatfield. Prison healthcare is nursing in a secure setting, from primary care and medicines to mental health and substance misuse, and we place nurses who want that kind of work. (New Hall, often confused with the cluster, is over the border in West Yorkshire.)

For critical and acute care, the county’s focal point is the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, the adult Major Trauma Centre for South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire since 2012, with its cardiothoracic centre and the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit. The Royal Hallamshire adds regional neurosciences and a neuro intensive care unit, Weston Park Cancer Centre handles specialist oncology, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital is the region’s paediatric Major Trauma Centre. We book ITU, HDU, theatre recovery and emergency nurses into these and the district general units at Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley.

Theatre work spans the NHS and the independent sector. NHS lists run at the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire in Sheffield, Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Rotherham Hospital and Barnsley Hospital, while the independent sector adds Thornbury Hospital, run by Circle Health Group, and Spire Claremont Hospital, both in Sheffield. We place scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioners across all of them.

Care & support work in South Yorkshire
Most care in South Yorkshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The county’s four metropolitan councils — Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley — each run their own adult social care service, and the work spans elderly care homes in the old coalfield towns, supported living for disabled adults and specialist neuro-rehabilitation in Sheffield. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
South Yorkshire’s care-home sector is concentrated in the old coalfield and Dearne Valley towns, where former mining communities in and around Doncaster, Barnsley, Mexborough and Wath upon Dearne are ageing in place. Doncaster alone has around 60 CQC-registered residential care homes, and care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Supported living is Sheffield City Council’s stated preferred model of care for adults with a learning disability, chosen to give people more rights, choice and control than a residential home. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

More than 13,000 people are recorded on GP dementia registers across the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board area, a recorded prevalence slightly above the England average. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day in the county’s care and nursing homes.

South Yorkshire has a genuine specialist neuro cluster in Sheffield — the 23-bed STEPS Rehabilitation centre on Troutbeck Road and Cygnet’s 24-bed Daley Care Centre for neurological complex care at Deepcar, alongside NHS community brain injury rehabilitation in the city. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
