    The county we cover

Every kind of nursing, right across Staffordshire

Staffordshire’s healthcare stretches from University Hospitals of North Midlands in Stoke and Stafford to one of the country’s densest clusters of prisons, and the work runs just as wide.

Acute care in the county centres on University Hospitals of North Midlands, one of the largest and most modern trusts in the country. It runs Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, home to the North Midlands major trauma centre and to Staffordshire Children’s Hospital, alongside County Hospital in Stafford. Royal Stoke’s emergency department is one of the busiest anywhere, and its trauma centre takes the most seriously injured patients from across the North Midlands and into North Wales. That scale means high-acuity work, day and night.

There is far more beyond the acute wards. Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, community and learning disability services across Staffordshire, from St George’s Hospital in Stafford to district nursing in people’s own homes. The county also holds an unusually large secure estate, with prisons from HMP Stafford and the women’s prison at HMP Drake Hall to HMP Dovegate in the east and HMYOI Werrington in the Moorlands. Add a busy independent hospital sector and a large care market, and the range of nursing work here is genuinely wide.

        Nursing & care homes

Staffordshire has an older population and a large care market to match. In 2022 the county council’s cost-of-care work counted more than 160 care homes for people aged 65 and over in the Staffordshire area, with over 7,000 registered beds between them, and that is before Stoke-on-Trent’s homes are added. That means steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, close to home.

        Mental health

Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust runs mental health services across the county, including acute wards and a psychiatric intensive care unit at St George’s Hospital in Stafford, and secure forensic services at the Hatherton Centre in Stafford. Mental health is a growing area of work for us, across inpatient, secure and community settings.

        Prison nursing

Staffordshire holds one of the densest clusters of prisons in the country. The estate runs from HMP Stafford and the women’s prison at HMP Drake Hall near Stafford, to HMP Dovegate in the east, HMP Swinfen Hall near Lichfield and HMYOI Werrington in the Moorlands, with Featherstone, Oakwood and Brinsford in the south of the county. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

        Critical care

Because Royal Stoke is the North Midlands major trauma centre, Staffordshire carries a lot of high-acuity and specialist work, including neurosurgery, cardiac and critical care that draws patients from a wide area. For ITU and HDU nurses who are confident with the most unstable patients, critical care shifts come up regularly.

        Theatres

Alongside the NHS lists at Royal Stoke and County Hospital, Staffordshire has an active independent hospital sector, including Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Rowley Hall Hospital in Stafford. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, that means regular theatre work across the county.

Care & support work in Staffordshire

Care and support work in Staffordshire

Most care in Staffordshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Staffordshire County Council is a large upper-tier social care authority, and the work spans elderly care homes across the county, supported living for disabled people and specialist neuro-rehabilitation in the Moorlands. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Staffordshire County Council’s own cost-of-care work counted more than 160 care homes for people aged 65 and over across the county, with over 7,000 registered beds between them — and that is before Stoke-on-Trent’s homes are added. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship, from the Potteries to the market towns of the south.

        Support worker

Staffordshire County Council commissions around 157 supported living schemes for people with a learning disability or autism, and its Housing with Care Strategy is deliberately shifting support away from residential and nursing placements towards ‘support at home’. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent has one of the strongest records for diagnosing dementia in the country: as of October 2024 the area’s NHS integrated care board had the third highest dementia diagnosis rate in England, reaching 72.8% by mid-2025 against a 66.7% national target. A high diagnosis rate means more residents identified and supported earlier, and dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

Staffordshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence — the Moorlands Neurological Centre at Cheadle, an Elysium Healthcare neurobehavioural hospital for adults with an acquired brain injury, alongside Headway brain-injury services in both North and South Staffordshire. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
