    The Surrey healthcare landscape

A quick tour of who runs what across the county, so you know where the work is.

Surrey is served by several acute NHS trusts. Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, home to St Luke’s Cancer Centre, a regional cancer and radiotherapy centre. Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, which holds the emergency department and a hyper-acute stroke unit, with planned and day-case work at Ashford Hospital; in 2024 these two trusts agreed a group model and appointed a shared group chief executive in January 2025. Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust runs Frimley Park Hospital near Camberley, a trauma unit within the South West London and Surrey Trauma Network with hyper-acute stroke and 24/7 primary PCI. Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust runs Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, one of the busiest joint-replacement units in the country, while Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust runs East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, a designated trauma unit. Surrey has no major trauma centre of its own, so the most seriously injured are taken on to St George’s in Tooting.

Mental health, learning disability and drug and alcohol services come mainly from Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford, the Ridgewood Centre in Frimley and the new Silverwood inpatient unit in Chertsey that replaced the older Abraham Cowley Unit in early 2025. Surrey also holds a sizeable secure estate: HMP and YOI Bronzefield near Ashford is the largest women’s prison in Europe, alongside HMP Send and HMP Coldingley near Woking and HMP High Down on the Banstead edge, all of which rely on nursing teams for their healthcare wings. Community and district nursing runs through Royal Surrey’s community services and First Community Health and Care in the east of the county, and the independent sector is strong, with Nuffield Health Guildford, Mount Alvernia and Ashtead Hospital all running busy theatre lists.

        Nursing & care homes

Surrey has a slightly older population than the England average, with close to one in five residents aged over 65 at the 2021 census and projections putting that above a quarter by 2047. That feeds steady demand for nursing-home and residential work across towns like Farnham, Godalming and Cranleigh, from dementia and nursing care to end-of-life support. Surrey County Council’s adult social care was rated good by the CQC in 2024.

        Mental health

Most inpatient mental health work sits with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, across Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford, the Ridgewood Centre in Frimley and the new Silverwood unit in Chertsey. Shifts range from acute adult wards to older people’s mental health, CAMHS and learning disability services.

        Prison nursing

Surrey has a genuine secure estate. HMP and YOI Bronzefield near Ashford is the largest women’s prison in Europe, and there is also HMP Send and HMP Coldingley near Woking and HMP High Down on the Banstead edge. Prison and secure healthcare is nurse-led work with its own rhythm, and we can talk you through what to expect before a first shift.

        Critical care

Critical care and emergency work concentrates at St Peter’s in Chertsey, Frimley Park near Camberley and East Surrey in Redhill. Frimley Park sits in the South West London and Surrey Trauma Network as a trauma unit, with hyper-acute stroke and 24/7 primary PCI, while the most seriously injured go on to the major trauma centre at St George’s in Tooting. ITU, HDU and recovery experience travels well here.

        Theatres

For theatre and recovery nurses there is both NHS and independent work. Epsom Hospital’s South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre runs one of the largest joint-replacement lists in the country, and the Royal Surrey handles regional cancer surgery. On the private side, Nuffield Health Guildford, Mount Alvernia, Ashtead Hospital and The Runnymede in Chertsey all keep steady elective lists.

Care & support work in Surrey

Care and support work in Surrey

Most care in Surrey is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Surrey County Council is one of England’s largest county councils, and as the local adult social care authority it supports a population of nearly 1.2 million across elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Surrey has around 213 residential and nursing care homes registered with the CQC, offering close to 10,500 beds and predominantly serving older people. The county’s population is older than the England average — close to one in five residents were aged over 65 at the 2021 census — which feeds steady demand across towns like Farnham, Godalming and Cranleigh. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Alongside its care homes, Surrey County Council is investing around £24 million in three new supported-living developments — in Horley, Byfleet and Cobham — as part of a drive to move people with learning disabilities out of residential care and into homes of their own. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

More than 10,000 people across NHS Surrey Heartlands have a recorded dementia diagnosis — 10,440 in the 2024/25 figures — and with the county’s population older than the England average, that number is set to keep rising. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day as Surrey’s older population continues to grow.

        Brain injury

Surrey has a genuine specialist neuro anchor in QEF’s Care and Rehabilitation Centre near Leatherhead, a 48-bed unit providing rehabilitation after acquired brain injury, stroke and spinal injury. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
