Nursing in Tyne and Wear
With the Tyne and Wear Metro and the A1 linking the five boroughs, less time on the road means more genuine choice about where and when you work.
Tyne and Wear packs a lot into a small footprint, so a shift is rarely far away. We cover work across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, North Shields, Washington and Whitley Bay, in acute wards, care homes and community settings. With the Metro and the A1 linking the boroughs, you can build a week of work that fits around your life rather than the other way round.
No guessing and no chasing. Every shift in the app shows the rate before you accept it, so you always know exactly what you will be paid. We keep timesheets and payment straightforward so the money lands when it should.
We keep your training, DBS and right-to-work documents in order and remind you before anything is due to lapse, so you stay ready to work. Our team knows what the trusts and care providers across the North East expect and helps you clear it without the usual back and forth.
The area we cover
Five boroughs, three acute trusts and one of the country’s biggest teaching-hospital networks all sit within a few miles of the river.
Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the anchor, running the Royal Victoria Infirmary, home to the Great North Children’s Hospital and the Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre, the region’s Level 1 major trauma centre, and the Freeman Hospital, which houses the Institute of Transplantation and the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead alongside Bensham Hospital. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust runs Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields and the specialist Sunderland Eye Infirmary. Between them these trusts cover everything from district general wards to tertiary transplant and cancer work.
Mental health and learning disability care is led by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW), formed in its current shape in 2019, which works from St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth and the purpose-built Hopewood Park in Ryhope, Sunderland, opened in 2014. No prison sits inside Tyne and Wear itself; the courts here are served by HMP Durham and HMP and YOI Low Newton just over the boundary in County Durham, with forensic and secure care led by CNTW. On the independent side, Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital and Spire Washington Hospital carry a steady surgical and outpatient list, and community nursing threads through every borough. That mix is why the demand for flexible staff here is so varied.
Where we work
From a major trauma call at the RVI to a care home night shift in Houghton-le-Spring, the work in this county spans the full range, and so do we.
Acute and surgical shifts across the big Newcastle sites at the RVI and Freeman, the Queen Elizabeth in Gateshead and Sunderland Royal, plus the independent lists at Nuffield Health Newcastle and Spire Washington. Wards, day units, recovery and theatre support.
Nursing and residential homes across all five boroughs, from Gosforth and Jarrow to Houghton-le-Spring, alongside community and homecare work. Steady, local shifts that suit anyone who wants regular hours close to home.
CNTW inpatient and community settings at St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth and Hopewood Park in Ryhope, plus older-people’s mental health and forensic work. Roles for RMNs and support workers used to challenging, rewarding environments.
We cover Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, North Shields, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Wallsend, Washington, Jarrow, Hebburn and Houghton-le-Spring.

Specialisms in Tyne and Wear
From Newcastle’s teaching hospitals to the coastal care homes at Whitley Bay and South Shields, wherever your experience sits there is local work for it.
Tyne and Wear’s former-industrial and coastal communities, from the pit villages around Houghton-le-Spring to the seafront at South Shields and Whitley Bay, have an older population and a large base of CQC-registered nursing and residential homes spread across Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. That means consistent demand for nurses and carers who are good with frailty, dementia and end-of-life care, close to where you live.

Mental health work here runs through Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth carries a range of inpatient and forensic services, and Hopewood Park in Ryhope, Sunderland provides assessment, treatment and psychiatric intensive care. We staff RMN and support-worker shifts across acute, older-people’s and community mental health settings.

Tyne and Wear does not have a prison within its own boundaries, so custodial healthcare work usually sits just outside the county at HMP Durham and the women’s prison HMP and YOI Low Newton in County Durham, or HMP Northumberland to the north. Closer to home, the equivalent secure and forensic nursing is delivered through CNTW’s forensic services at St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth, which is a good fit if you are interested in secure mental health rather than a prison setting.

For critical care, the county centres on Newcastle. The Royal Victoria Infirmary’s Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre is a Level 1 major trauma centre serving the northern half of the Northern Trauma Network, which runs from the Scottish Borders to North Yorkshire, and the Freeman Hospital’s cardiothoracic and transplant work carries specialist ITU demand. Sunderland Royal and the Queen Elizabeth in Gateshead add further intensive and high-dependency capacity. We place experienced ITU, HDU and ED nurses across these sites.

Surgical and theatre work spans the NHS sites at the RVI, Freeman, Queen Elizabeth Gateshead and Sunderland Royal, including the Peter Smith Surgery Centre in Gateshead, alongside the independent theatres at Nuffield Health Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital and Spire Washington. Scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioners are in steady demand across both.

Care & support work in Tyne and Wear
Most care in Tyne and Wear is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. This is a dense metropolitan county of more than 1.1 million people across five boroughs — Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside — with an older population above the England average, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation in Newcastle. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Tyne and Wear’s coastal and former-industrial communities have a notably older population: in South Tyneside more than one in five residents are aged 65 or over, above the England average, with Sunderland and Gateshead close behind at around 21%. That feeds steady demand across the county’s many CQC-registered nursing and residential homes, from the seafront at South Shields and Whitley Bay to the former pit villages around Houghton-le-Spring. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Disability support here has a real local anchor in the Percy Hedley Foundation, based at Forest Hall in North Tyneside, which supports around 650 disabled people and their families with a workforce of more than 1,000 staff. Alongside its residential homes in Newcastle, it runs supported living that helps the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting. That kind of provision means steady demand for support workers right across the county.

Sunderland alone has close to 60,000 residents aged 65 or over, and across Tyne and Wear’s ageing boroughs dementia is one of the most common reasons older people move into residential care. CNTW provides older people’s mental health and memory services across the county, including from mental health sites such as Monkwearmouth Hospital in Sunderland, while most day-to-day dementia care happens in local care homes. Supporting residents to live well with dementia is some of the most valued work in the sector.

Tyne and Wear has a genuine neuro anchor in Walkergate Park, CNTW’s specialist centre for neurorehabilitation and neuropsychiatry in the east end of Newcastle, which provides inpatient and community rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injury and complex neurological conditions. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
