The county we cover
Warwickshire’s healthcare runs from the acute wards at Warwick and Nuneaton to community hospitals in the market towns, and the work runs just as wide.
Acute care in the county is split between two trusts. South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust runs Warwick Hospital, the main acute site with its emergency department and maternity unit, alongside Stratford Hospital for radiology and outpatients, Leamington Spa Hospital at Heathcote, home to the Central England Rehabilitation Unit and the Feldon stroke ward, and the redeveloped Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston-on-Stour, which reopened in 2025. To the north, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust runs its single acute site on College Street in Nuneaton, with A&E, elective surgery and maternity for the top of the county. The most seriously injured patients route out to University Hospital Coventry, the Level 1 major trauma centre and hub of the Central England Trauma Network, which sits just over the boundary in the West Midlands but serves Coventry and Warwickshire together. That mix means both district general work and high-acuity care, day and night.
Beyond the acute wards there is far more. Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust provides mental health, learning disability, autism and community services across the county, including inpatient care at St Michael’s Hospital in Warwick, where Hazelwood Ward offers locked rehabilitation and the trust runs acute and psychiatric intensive care. The secure estate sits at the county’s southern edge, where HMP Onley and the privately run HMP Rye Hill cluster together near Rugby on Warwickshire postal addresses, right on the Northamptonshire boundary. The independent sector centres on Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital in Leamington Spa, whose three operating theatres handle orthopaedic, spinal, eye and general surgery. Add district and community nursing in people’s own homes and a large care market, and the range of nursing work here is genuinely wide.

Specialisms in Warwickshire
Whatever you specialise in, from critical care at Warwick Hospital and George Eliot to the secure wings near Rugby and the county’s care homes, there is genuine demand right across Warwickshire. Here is where the work is.
Warwickshire has an ageing population and a large care market to match. The county council’s 2024 planning work put the number of residents aged 65 and over on course to reach around 157,600 by 2035, with dementia cases projected by the Alzheimer’s Society to rise from roughly 8,760 in 2020 to about 11,227 by 2030. Warwickshire County Council’s own adult social care was rated Good by the CQC. That all adds up to steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, close to home.

Mental health services across the county are led by Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust. Its main inpatient base in Warwickshire is St Michael’s Hospital in Warwick, where Hazelwood Ward provides locked rehabilitation and the trust runs acute and psychiatric intensive care alongside community mental health teams. There is regular demand for RMNs across inpatient wards, crisis and community work.

Warwickshire’s secure estate sits right at its southern edge. HMP Onley, a Category C men’s prison, and HMP Rye Hill, a privately run Category C site, cluster together near Rugby on Warwickshire postal addresses, though the land itself straddles the Northamptonshire boundary. Prison and secure healthcare is some of the most autonomous nursing there is, and it suits nurses who want to work at the top of their scope.

The most seriously injured and sickest patients from Warwickshire route to University Hospital Coventry, the Level 1 major trauma centre and hub of the Central England Trauma Network. It sits just over the boundary in the West Midlands but serves Coventry and Warwickshire together, while Warwick Hospital and George Eliot run their own critical care and high dependency beds. For ITU and critical care nurses, that means acuity at every level.

Theatre work spans NHS and independent lists. Warwick Hospital and George Eliot in Nuneaton run the county’s NHS operating lists, while Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital in Leamington Spa handles private and NHS-funded surgery across three theatres, covering orthopaedics, spinal, eye and general surgery. For scrub, recovery and ODP work, there is a steady mix of elective and day-case lists.

Care & support work in Warwickshire
Most care in Warwickshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Warwickshire County Council runs adult social care for a county of more than half a million people — a service the CQC rated Good — and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Warwickshire’s older population is heavily concentrated in the south: in the Stratford-on-Avon district a quarter of residents are aged 65 or over, the highest proportion of any district in the county and well above the roughly 18% in Rugby. With the county’s over-65 population projected to reach around 157,600 by 2035, care assistants are the backbone of its elderly homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Warwickshire County Council is deliberately shifting learning-disability support away from residential care towards supported living: its February 2024 market position statement records a fall in the number of people with learning disabilities in council-funded residential care, driven by a growing focus on supported-living provision. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

Dementia cases in Warwickshire are projected to climb from around 8,760 in 2020 to about 11,227 by 2030 as the county’s older population grows, according to Alzheimer’s Society modelling. The area has responded with a joint Coventry and Warwickshire Living Well with Dementia Strategy for 2024 to 2029, and memory assessment across the area is run by Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

Warwickshire has a genuine neuro-rehabilitation anchor in the Central England Rehabilitation Unit at Leamington Spa Hospital, which provides specialist inpatient rehabilitation for adults after an acquired brain injury, supported in the community by the Headway Coventry and Warwickshire brain-injury groups that meet in Nuneaton and Warwick. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain or spinal injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
