The area we cover
The West Midlands metropolitan county packs a huge amount of healthcare into its seven boroughs, and so does the work.
Acute care here spans several large NHS trusts. University Hospitals Birmingham runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, the adult major trauma centre for the region, along with Heartlands, Good Hope in Sutton Coldfield and Solihull Hospital. Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust runs Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the paediatric major trauma centre, and Birmingham Women’s Hospital. Across the Black Country there is New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, Russells Hall in Dudley and Walsall Manor, plus the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick, which opened in October 2024 to take over the acute wards from City and Sandwell General. Over in Coventry, University Hospital Coventry at Walsgrave is the other adult major trauma centre serving the county.
There is far more beyond the acute wards. Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust provides inpatient and community mental health care, including the medium secure Reaside Clinic at Rubery. Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust runs mental health services across Penn Hospital in Wolverhampton, Bushey Fields in Dudley, Hallam Street in West Bromwich and Dorothy Pattison in Walsall, while the Caludon Centre in Coventry sits with Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership. Birmingham Community Healthcare covers district and community nursing across the city. Add HMP Birmingham at Winson Green, a busy independent hospital sector and a large care sector, and the range of work is genuinely wide.

Specialisms in West Midlands
Whatever you specialise in, there is genuine demand here, from major trauma at the Queen Elizabeth to the care homes of Dudley and Walsall. Here is where the work is.
The West Midlands has a large care sector spread across its seven boroughs, and an ageing population keeps it busy. Birmingham alone is one of the largest local authorities in Europe, and there are hundreds of CQC-registered care and nursing homes across the city, the Black Country, Coventry and Solihull. That means steady work for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff, close to home.

Mental health is a growing area of work for us. Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust runs services across the city, including the medium secure Reaside Clinic at Rubery, while Black Country Healthcare covers Penn Hospital in Wolverhampton, Bushey Fields in Dudley, Hallam Street in West Bromwich and Dorothy Pattison in Walsall. There is regular inpatient, secure and community work.

The main prison inside the metropolitan county is HMP Birmingham at Winson Green, a large Category B local prison. Just over the Staffordshire border near Wolverhampton sits a cluster of three more, HMP Featherstone, HMP Oakwood and HMP Brinsford, all within easy reach. Prison nursing is autonomous, varied work, and we help you get the enhanced clearance sorted before you start.

Because the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the region’s adult major trauma centre, and Birmingham Children’s Hospital the paediatric one, the West Midlands carries a lot of high-acuity and specialist work, from neurosurgery and major burns to transplant and liver care. For ITU and HDU nurses who are confident with the most unstable patients, critical care shifts come up regularly across the county.

Alongside its NHS lists, the West Midlands has a busy independent hospital sector, including Spire Little Aston in Sutton Coldfield, Spire Parkway in Solihull, The Priory Hospital in Edgbaston and Nuffield Health in Wolverhampton. For scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses, ODPs and surgical first assistants, that means regular theatre work is never far away.

Care & support work in West Midlands
Most care across the West Midlands is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The metropolitan county packs seven boroughs into a small area, and Birmingham City Council alone is one of the largest local authorities in Europe, commissioning adult social care on a huge scale — from elderly care homes to supported living and neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in Europe, with nearly 40% of its population under 25, but the boroughs around it tell a different story. Solihull is the oldest part of the county — with an older age profile than the city and a steadily growing over-65 population — and it is here, along with Dudley and Walsall, that older people’s care homes are busiest. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Birmingham City Council is one of the largest local authorities in Europe, and adult social care here includes commissioning learning-disability and physical-disability support at real scale. Like the rest of the sector, the West Midlands is steadily shifting support away from residential care towards supported living — which means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

Across the Black Country — Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton — more than 14,200 people are living with dementia, according to the area’s NHS integrated care board, and that number rises as the population ages. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day in the county’s care homes.

The West Midlands has a genuine neuro cluster. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham is the region’s adult major trauma centre and a regional neurosciences centre, and many people move on from there into rehabilitation. Birmingham Community Healthcare runs the area’s neurological rehabilitation service, including inpatient neuro-rehab and a brain injury specialist clinic based at Moseley Hall Hospital, and Headway Birmingham & Solihull, a local brain-injury charity, supports people across the city. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
