Why nurses choose Novello in the West Midlands

Work that fits around your life, with none of the usual agency runaround.

Shifts near you, not across the region

Whether you are in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stoke, Coventry, Worcester, Shrewsbury or Hereford, you pick the shifts that suit you. The app shows what is available nearby, so you are not driving from one side of the region to the other for a single shift.

Confirmed pay before you say yes

Every shift shows its rate up front. Your confirmed rate is shown in the app before you accept, so you know exactly what you will earn, and you are paid promptly with no chasing timesheets or waiting weeks to find out where you stand.

Compliance sorted once, then out of your way

We handle your DBS, mandatory training and revalidation checks properly, so you can move between an NHS ward in Birmingham, a care home in Worcestershire or a secure unit in Staffordshire without repeating the same paperwork for every placement.

    The area we cover

The healthcare landscape across the West Midlands

The West Midlands is a region of around 6.2 million people, stretching from the Birmingham conurbation out across Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, and its hospitals, mental health services and care homes all lean on flexible nursing staff.

Acute care here is anchored by some of the busiest trusts in the country. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, one of three adult major trauma centres in the region, alongside Heartlands, Good Hope in Sutton Coldfield and Solihull. The other adult trauma centres are University Hospital Coventry at Walsgrave, hub of the Central England Trauma Network, and Royal Stoke University Hospital in Staffordshire, the North Midlands centre, while Birmingham Children’s Hospital is the region’s paediatric major trauma centre. Beyond them, the Royal Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital, Russells Hall in Dudley, Walsall Manor and the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick cover the Black Country, with Worcestershire Royal, the Alexandra in Redditch, Royal Shrewsbury, the Princess Royal in Telford, Warwick Hospital and Hereford County Hospital serving the wider counties.

The region also carries a strong mental health and community spread. Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust runs the medium secure Reaside Clinic at Rubery, Black Country Healthcare covers Penn Hospital in Wolverhampton and sites across Dudley, Walsall and West Bromwich, Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust delivers services across Staffordshire and Shropshire including the Hatherton Centre in Stafford and the Clee Building in Shrewsbury, and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care add further inpatient and community teams. On top of that sits one of England’s densest prison estates, from HMP Birmingham at Winson Green and the Staffordshire cluster of HMP Stafford, Dovegate, Oakwood and Featherstone to HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire, alongside a busy independent hospital sector.

        Nursing & care homes

The West Midlands care sector is large and under real pressure. In 2023/24 the region had around 194,000 adult social care posts across roughly 4,200 care-providing locations, with about 13,500 vacancies to fill on any given day. The western counties skew older and more rural, and Staffordshire alone counts more than 160 care homes for older people, so nursing and residential homes across the region need steady, reliable agency cover. It is some of the most consistent work we offer for RGNs, RMNs and experienced care staff.

        Mental health

Mental health work spans several trusts here. Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust runs the medium secure Reaside Clinic at Rubery, Black Country Healthcare covers Penn Hospital in Wolverhampton and sites across Dudley, Walsall and West Bromwich, Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust delivers care across Staffordshire and Shropshire including the Hatherton Centre in Stafford and the Clee Building in Shrewsbury, and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care run further inpatient and community services. We place mental health nurses and support workers into inpatient wards, community teams and secure units.

        Prison nursing

The West Midlands holds one of the densest prison estates in England. HMP Birmingham at Winson Green is a busy Category B local, Staffordshire carries a notable cluster including HMP Stafford, HMP Dovegate, HMP Oakwood, HMP Swinfen Hall and the women’s HMP Drake Hall, and there are more at HMP Long Lartin and HMP Hewell in Worcestershire, HMP Onley and Rye Hill near Rugby and HMP Stoke Heath in Shropshire. Prison healthcare is nurse-led and always short of hands, and it is some of the most rewarding work going for nurses who want something different from a ward.

        Critical care

Critical care in the region is unusually concentrated, with three adult major trauma centres in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospital Coventry and Royal Stoke, plus Birmingham Children’s Hospital as the paediatric centre. That brings high-acuity work from neurosurgery and major burns to transplant and liver care, backed by intensive care units at trusts right across the six counties. We place experienced ITU and HDU nurses where the pressure is highest.

        Theatres

Theatre work runs across both sectors. The region’s NHS trusts operate scores of theatres between them, including specialist centres like the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Gobowen, and the independent hospitals, Spire Little Aston, Spire Parkway in Solihull, Spire South Bank in Worcester and Nuffield sites in Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and beyond, all run full surgical lists. We place scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses across elective and emergency work.

Care & support work in the West Midlands

Care and support work in the West Midlands

Most care across the West Midlands is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Birmingham City Council is England’s largest local authority, serving over 1.1 million people, and adult social care here spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation, with services reaching right across the region’s six counties. The West Midlands had around 194,000 adult social care posts in 2023/24 with roughly 13,500 vacancies to fill on any given day, so whatever your background there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

The West Midlands’ rural western counties skew markedly older than the national average: in Herefordshire more than a quarter of the population — over one in four — is aged 65 or over, against roughly 19% across England, and neighbouring Shropshire and Worcestershire are ageing on the same trajectory. Staffordshire alone counts more than 160 care homes for older people. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Birmingham City Council, England’s largest local authority, serves over 1.1 million people and commissions supported living right across the city for adults with learning disabilities and autism, with providers such as Lifeways operating locally. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

As the West Midlands population ages — fastest in the rural western counties — dementia is becoming more common, and thousands of people are living with the condition across Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country today. Supporting older residents with dementia to live well day to day, with routine, patience and familiar faces, is some of the most valued work in the sector.

        Brain injury

The West Midlands has a genuine specialist neuro cluster centred on Birmingham: Birmingham Community Healthcare runs inpatient neurological rehabilitation at Moseley Hall Hospital, providing assessment and intensive rehabilitation after brain injury and stroke, and Headway Birmingham & Solihull provides dedicated acquired brain-injury support across the city. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after an acquired brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
