The county we cover
West Sussex is served mainly by University Hospitals Sussex, Sussex Partnership and Sussex Community NHS foundation trusts, alongside a busy care sector shaped by one of England’s oldest populations. Here is where the work sits.
Most acute care in West Sussex runs through University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, formed in 2021, which operates the county’s two main district general hospitals: Worthing Hospital, which is also the trust’s headquarters, and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, both with emergency and maternity departments. Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea adds day surgery and outpatient services. Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, run by its own foundation trust, is the specialist reconstructive surgery centre for the south east and has been world famous for burns and plastic surgery since Sir Archibald McIndoe’s wartime unit. In the north east of the county, many people around Crawley are treated at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, run by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which also provides outpatient and diagnostic clinics at Crawley Hospital and Horsham Hospital. Major trauma routes out of the county to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, just outside West Sussex, which is the region’s designated major trauma centre.
Mental health across West Sussex is provided by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, whose purpose-built Langley Green Hospital in Crawley runs a psychiatric intensive care ward alongside acute wards for working-age adults and older people. Community nursing is largely delivered through Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, which also runs community hospitals across the county. HMP Ford, out near Arundel and Littlehampton, is a large category D open prison and one of the county’s main secure settings needing healthcare cover. On the independent side, Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital on Broyle Road runs orthopaedic, ophthalmic and general surgical lists. With one of the oldest populations of any English county, nursing and residential care homes are a major source of work right along the coast and inland.
Where we work
Hospital wards, care homes and community settings. If it needs a nurse or a healthcare assistant, we can help staff it.
We support ward, department and theatre work in and around the county’s acute sites, including the district general hospitals at Worthing and Chichester and specialist surgical centres like Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. From general medicine to surgical lists, we place nurses where the pressure is.
With so many older residents across Arun, Chichester and the coastal towns, nursing and residential homes are a steady source of shifts. We also cover community and domiciliary settings, so there is regular work whether you prefer a home environment or visiting care.
We place staff in mental health units such as those run by Sussex Partnership, and in secure and forensic settings like HMP Ford. These roles suit nurses and HCAs who want variety and are comfortable in structured, specialist environments.
We staff shifts in Crawley, Worthing, Chichester, Horsham, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Shoreham-by-Sea, among many others.
Working across the border? We also cover the South East, East Sussex and Surrey.

Specialisms in West Sussex
Wherever your strengths lie, there is work for you across the county.
Care homes are one of the biggest employers of nurses in West Sussex. The county has one of the oldest populations in England, with people aged 65 and over making up around 23 percent of residents in 2022 and set to rise further by 2035, and homes across Arun, Chichester and the coast run close to full. If you enjoy building relationships and caring for older people, including those living with dementia, there is steady, rewarding work here.

Mental health services are led by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Its Langley Green Hospital in Crawley is a purpose-built acute unit with a psychiatric intensive care ward and acute wards for both working-age adults and older people, and the trust runs community mental health teams across the county. We place mental health nurses and support workers into inpatient and community roles.

West Sussex is home to HMP Ford, near Arundel and Littlehampton, a large category D open prison holding low-risk men towards the end of their sentences. Healthcare in prisons is a distinct field covering primary care, medicines management and mental health, and it suits nurses who want a change from ward life. If secure and forensic work appeals, we can talk you through what it involves.

Critical care and higher-acuity work centre on the acute trust’s units at Worthing and St Richard’s. For major trauma, the region’s designated centre is the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, just outside the county. We place experienced nurses into ITU, HDU and high-dependency roles where trusts need extra cover.

Surgical work spans the NHS and the independent sector. Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead is a national specialist reconstructive and burns centre with a large team of theatres, and general surgical lists run at Worthing, St Richard’s and Southlands. In the private sector, Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital on Broyle Road runs orthopaedic, ophthalmic and general surgery. We supply scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses across all of these settings.

Care & support work in West Sussex
Most care in West Sussex is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. West Sussex County Council runs a large adult social care operation in one of the oldest counties in England, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and learning-disability services. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.
West Sussex has hundreds of older people’s care homes, and demand is heaviest along the coast, where districts such as Arun have some of the oldest populations in the county. Across West Sussex, people aged 65 and over made up about 23% of residents in 2022, one of the highest shares of any English county. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Alongside its care homes, West Sussex County Council commissions supported living so that younger disabled adults can live in their own homes rather than in residential care, in step with the Sussex Transforming Care direction of moving people out of hospital and into the community. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

An estimated 13,870 people were living with dementia in West Sussex in 2020, a figure the county’s needs assessment expects to rise to around 17,400 by 2030 as the older population grows. With so many care and nursing homes concentrated along the coast, dementia care is some of the most in-demand work in the county, supporting residents to live well day to day.

West Sussex has a long-established local learning-disability provider in the Aldingbourne Trust, a Chichester-area charity that runs supported housing, day services and supported employment for adults with learning disabilities and autism across the county. As the council commissions more of this kind of community support, there is steady demand for support workers who help the people they support build skills, find work and live as independently as possible rather than in a care home.
