The healthcare landscape in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire is a dense metropolitan county of nearly two and a half million people, and its hospitals, mental health services and care homes all lean on flexible nursing staff.

Acute care here is anchored by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s University Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe. The Leeds Major Trauma Centre at the LGI has cared for the seriously injured from right across West Yorkshire since it opened in 2013, and the trust also holds regional cardiac, neurosurgery, liver and children’s services. Beyond Leeds, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Bradford Royal Infirmary, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust runs Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust covers Pinderfields in Wakefield along with Dewsbury and Pontefract hospitals, and Airedale NHS Foundation Trust runs Airedale General Hospital near Keighley.

Mental health and community care are split across three trusts: Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for Leeds, Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust with its Lynfield Mount Hospital, and South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, whose Fieldhead site in Wakefield houses Newton Lodge, the Yorkshire Centre for Forensic Psychiatry. The county also carries a heavy prison estate, including the Category A HMP Wakefield, the Category B HMP Leeds at Armley, the women’s prison HMP New Hall near Flockton and HMP Wealstun near Wetherby. On the independent side, Nuffield Health Leeds, Spire Leeds in Roundhay and the Yorkshire Clinic in Bingley all run busy operating theatres, while Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust keeps district nursing going in people’s homes.

        Nursing & care homes

West Yorkshire’s care sector is under real pressure. Across Yorkshire and the Humber there were around 2,700 registered residential care home beds for every 100,000 people aged 65 and over as at April 2024, and nursing home places in the region have fallen since 2014 even as the older population keeps growing. That leaves nursing and residential homes in Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees and Wakefield needing steady, reliable agency cover, and it is some of the most consistent work we offer.

        Mental health

Mental health work spans three trusts here. Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust covers Leeds, Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust runs services including Lynfield Mount Hospital, and South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust delivers mental health and learning disability care across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield from its Fieldhead base. We place mental health nurses and support workers into inpatient wards, community teams and secure units.

        Prison nursing

West Yorkshire holds one of the larger prison estates in the north. HMP Leeds at Armley is a busy Category B local, HMP Wakefield is a high-security Category A prison, HMP New Hall near Flockton is a closed women’s prison with a mother and baby unit, and HMP Wealstun sits near Wetherby. Prison healthcare is nurse-led and always short of hands, and it is some of the most rewarding work going for nurses who want something different from a ward.

        Critical care

Critical care in the county centres on the Leeds Major Trauma Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, which has treated the seriously injured from across West Yorkshire since 2013, backed by intensive care units at St James’s, Bradford Royal Infirmary, Pinderfields, Calderdale Royal and Huddersfield Royal. We place experienced ITU and HDU nurses where the pressure is highest.

        Theatres

Theatre work runs across both sectors. The county’s NHS trusts operate scores of theatres between them, and the independent hospitals, Nuffield Health Leeds, Spire Leeds in Roundhay and the Yorkshire Clinic in Bingley, all run full surgical lists. We place scrub, anaesthetic and recovery nurses across elective and emergency work.

Care & support work in West Yorkshire

Care and support work in West Yorkshire

Most care in West Yorkshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. This is a dense metropolitan county of nearly two and a half million people served by five councils — Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield — with Leeds City Council among the largest local authorities in England, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Leeds alone has more than 150 registered care homes, the large majority of them caring for older people, and across West Yorkshire’s five districts the total runs well into the hundreds. Yorkshire and the Humber had around 2,700 registered residential care-home beds for every 100,000 people aged 65 and over in 2024, yet nursing-home places in the region have fallen since 2014 even as the older population keeps growing. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

In Leeds, learning-disability support is delivered at scale by Aspire, a community benefit society created when Leeds City Council transferred its in-house services in 2015, which now runs supported living across the city. Neighbouring Bradford is likewise shifting its commissioning away from residential care towards supported living for disabled people. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible — in their own homes and out in the community, rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

Around 4.4% of people aged over 65 in West Yorkshire had a recorded diagnosis of dementia in 2024, according to the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, and more than 100 care homes in Leeds alone offer specialist dementia support. As the county’s older population grows, so does the need for staff trained to care for people living with the condition. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

West Yorkshire has a genuine specialist brain-injury base in Daniel Yorath House, a neurobehavioural rehabilitation centre in Garforth on the eastern edge of Leeds, run by The Disabilities Trust and caring for people since 1992. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after an acquired brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
