    The county we cover

    The healthcare landscape in Wiltshire

A quick, honest picture of who runs what across the county, so you know the ground you are working on.

Wiltshire has two main acute NHS trusts. Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, serving the north of the county. Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust runs Salisbury District Hospital on Odstock Road at Britford, in the south. Salisbury is a specialist centre well beyond its local patch: it is home to the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, a regional spinal cord injury unit that takes patients from across much of southern England, and a regional burns and plastics service that sits within the South West UK Burns Network. There is no major trauma centre inside Wiltshire, so the most seriously injured patients are usually taken out of county to Southmead in Bristol or to Southampton. Both trusts sit under the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board.

Mental health across the county is run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, known as AWP, whose inpatient sites include Green Lane Hospital in Devizes, alongside community mental health teams covering the north, east and west of Wiltshire. The county has one prison, HMP Erlestoke, a category C men’s prison in the countryside near Devizes. On the independent side, New Hall Hospital near Salisbury, run by Ramsay Health Care, and The Ridgeway Hospital in Swindon, run by Circle Health Group, handle a lot of planned surgery. Add a large, spread-out care home sector and district nursing across a rural county, and you have a genuine mix of places to work.

        Nursing & care homes

The care home sector is one of Wiltshire’s biggest employers of nurses. As at 2025 the county had around 165 registered care homes and roughly 5,000 care beds, with the largest clusters around Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge. The population is ageing fast: the 2021 Census put nearly 22% of Wiltshire residents at 65 or over, above the England average of 18.4%, and that share is projected to keep rising through to 2040. That means real, ongoing demand for nurses and healthcare assistants in nursing and residential homes.

        Mental health

Mental health across Wiltshire is run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP). Its footprint includes inpatient services at Green Lane Hospital in Devizes and community mental health teams covering the north, east and west of the county. If you have mental health experience, this is where inpatient and community demand sits locally.

        Prison nursing

Wiltshire has a single prison, HMP Erlestoke, a category C men’s establishment in the countryside near Devizes holding around 500 men, many on longer sentences. It runs an on-site healthcare service. If you are open to secure and prison healthcare, it is the main custodial setting in the county, and forensic and secure mental health work also comes up through AWP.

        Critical care

Critical care and high-dependency work in Wiltshire centres on the intensive care units at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon and Salisbury District Hospital. Salisbury also carries specialist regional caseloads through its Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, a 45-bed spinal cord injury unit, and its Odstock burns and plastics service. Note there is no in-county major trauma centre, so the most severe trauma is transferred to Southmead in Bristol or to Southampton.

        Theatres

Surgical and theatre nurses have both NHS and independent options. NHS theatre lists run at the Great Western Hospital and Salisbury District Hospital, while the independent sector adds New Hall Hospital near Salisbury, a Ramsay site known for orthopaedic and elective spinal work in its ultra-clean theatres, and The Ridgeway Hospital in Swindon, run by Circle Health Group. Scrub, anaesthetics and recovery roles all come up.

Care & support work in Wiltshire

Care and support work in Wiltshire

Most care in Wiltshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. The county is served by two unitary councils, Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and the specialist services clustered around Salisbury. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Wiltshire has around 165 registered care homes with roughly 5,000 beds, and the largest clusters sit around Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge. Across a large, mostly rural county that spread of homes means care assistants are in demand year-round. They are the backbone of these homes, supporting residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Wiltshire is home to Alabaré, a Salisbury-based charity that runs supported homes and community services for adults with learning disabilities, alongside supported living commissioned by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

Wiltshire is an older county than most of England: at the 2021 Census nearly 22% of residents were aged 65 or over, well above the England average of 18.4%, and that share is projected to keep rising towards 2040. Memory and community mental health services across the county are run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Complex care

Salisbury is home to the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, a 45-bed spinal cord injury unit and one of only a small number of NHS spinal centres in the country, taking patients from across much of southern England. People with high spinal injuries often go on to need long-term ventilation, tracheostomy and PEG support, so complex-care packages in people’s own homes are a real part of the local picture. This is skills-led work, and the training you gain here transfers anywhere in the country.

        Wiltshire nursing agency: common questions

Which hospitals will I find shifts in around Wiltshire?

The two main acute sites are the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, run by Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Salisbury District Hospital, run by Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Beyond the NHS there are independent hospitals at New Hall near Salisbury and The Ridgeway in Swindon, plus a large number of care homes and community services. We name these as the local landscape; the specific shifts available to you depend on our current bookings.

Is there a major trauma centre in Wiltshire?

No. There is no major trauma centre inside the county, so the most seriously injured patients are usually taken out of county to Southmead Hospital in Bristol or to Southampton. Salisbury District Hospital does hold specialist regional roles though, including the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre and a regional burns and plastics service.

What mental health work is available in Wiltshire?

Mental health services across the county are run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), which includes inpatient care at Green Lane Hospital in Devizes and community mental health teams covering the county. If you have mental health experience, that is where local inpatient and community demand tends to sit.

Is there much care home work in the county?

Yes. As at 2025 Wiltshire had around 165 registered care homes and roughly 5,000 beds, with the biggest clusters around Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge. With nearly 22% of residents aged 65 or over at the 2021 Census and that share rising, demand for nurses and healthcare assistants in nursing homes is steady.
