    The county we cover

    The Worcestershire healthcare landscape

A quick picture of who runs what across the county, so you know the settings you could pick up work in.

Acute hospital care in the county is run by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which serves a population of around 580,000 from three main sites. Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester is the largest, with an emergency department, around nine operating theatres including laminar-flow theatres, a cardiac catheterisation lab, a neonatal unit and the Worcestershire Oncology Centre, which opened in January 2015 and brought radiotherapy into the county for the first time. The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch and Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre make up the other two sites, with Kidderminster focused on planned surgery, diagnostics and outpatients. Worcestershire has no major trauma centre of its own, so the most seriously injured patients are taken out of county to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or University Hospital Coventry.

Mental health, learning disability and community services are provided by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust. Its main inpatient mental health base is Newtown Hospital in Worcester, home to the Elgar Unit for working-age adults and a place of safety suite. The same trust runs the county’s community hospitals and minor injury units, including Malvern, Pershore, Evesham, Tenbury and the Princess of Wales Community Hospital in Bromsgrove, which has rehabilitation wards, the Primrose palliative care unit and a nurse-led minor injuries unit, alongside district and community nursing teams across the county. On the secure side, HMP Hewell sits at Tardebigge near Redditch, a category B men’s prison formed in 2008 from the former Blakenhurst, Brockhill and Hewell Grange sites. Private and independent work sits mainly at Spire South Bank Hospital in Worcester, with its two laminar-flow theatres, a laparoscopic theatre and JAG-accredited endoscopy, while independent mental health beds include the Priory Hospital at Barnt Green in the Bromsgrove district, which runs acute and psychiatric intensive care wards.

        Nursing & care homes

Worcestershire has an older population than the national average, with around 138,000 residents aged 65 and over, roughly 23 per cent of the county, according to 2021 Census figures. That drives steady demand for nursing home and residential care work in towns such as Bromsgrove, Malvern and Droitwich Spa, from general and dementia nursing to end-of-life care, and it is some of the most reliable, regular work on our books.

        Mental health

Mental health and learning disability services across the county are run by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, centred on Newtown Hospital in Worcester and its Elgar Unit for working-age adults, with a place of safety suite for people in crisis. NHS provision is complemented by independent services such as the Priory Hospital at Barnt Green near Bromsgrove, which runs acute mental health and psychiatric intensive care beds. We book RMNs and mental health support staff into settings of this kind, covering acute wards, crisis work and community mental health.

        Prison nursing

Worcestershire does have a prison of its own. HMP Hewell sits at Tardebigge just outside Redditch, a category B men’s establishment formed in 2008 from the former Blakenhurst, Brockhill and Hewell Grange prisons. Prison and secure healthcare is a distinct field, covering primary care, mental health and substance misuse in a custodial setting, and it suits nurses who want variety and a good deal of independence.

        Critical care

Worcestershire has no major trauma centre in-county, so the most seriously injured patients are transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham or University Hospital Coventry. Critical care within the county is based at Worcestershire Royal in Worcester, which has intensive care, a neonatal unit and a cardiac catheterisation lab. We book experienced ITU, HDU and critical care nurses into acute settings of this kind.

        Theatres

There is regular theatre work across the county. Worcestershire Royal runs around nine operating theatres including laminar-flow theatres, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre handles a large volume of planned surgery and diagnostics, and on the private side Spire South Bank in Worcester has two laminar-flow theatres and a laparoscopic theatre plus JAG-accredited endoscopy. We place scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioners across all of these settings.

Care & support work in Worcestershire

Care and support work in Worcestershire

Most care in Worcestershire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Worcestershire County Council is the adult social care authority for a county of around 600,000 people, with roughly 138,000 residents aged 65 or over, and the work spans around 170 care homes, supported living for adults with learning disabilities and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. Whatever your background, there is regular work near you.

        Care assistant

Worcestershire has around 170 registered care homes, most of them residential rather than nursing homes — the settings where care assistants, not nurses, are the core of the team. Demand is driven by an older-than-average population: about 138,000 residents are aged 65 or over, roughly 23 per cent of the county, according to the 2021 Census. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older people with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

        Support worker

Alongside its care homes, Worcestershire County Council supports more than 1,400 adults with a learning disability, and it is deliberately moving support towards supported living: council-funded supported living placements rose from 330 to 490 between 2017 and 2022, an increase of almost 50 per cent. That means steady demand for support workers who help the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community rather than in a care-home setting.

        Dementia care

An estimated 8,300 people aged 65 or over are living with dementia in Worcestershire, yet only around 56 per cent have a formal diagnosis, according to the county’s dementia needs assessment. That number is projected to climb to over 11,000 by 2028 and more than 14,000 by 2038 as the older population grows. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting residents to live well day to day.

        Brain injury

Worcester is home to Inspire Neurocare, a purpose-built neurological rehabilitation and complex-care centre of around 40 beds on Oldbury Road, supporting people with acquired brain injury, stroke and Parkinson’s. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence after a brain injury, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy and other clinical support.
