The county we cover
Cheshire is a big, mixed county, from the city wards of Chester to the mill towns of the east and the industrial towns of Warrington and Halton.
The county’s acute care is spread across four NHS trusts. The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs the Countess of Chester in the west along with Ellesmere Port Hospital. Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust covers the centre from Leighton Hospital near Crewe, the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich and the Elmhurst intermediate care centre in Winsford. East Cheshire NHS Trust looks after Macclesfield District General Hospital, Congleton War Memorial and the community hospital at Knutsford. In the north, Warrington Hospital and Halton Hospital in Runcorn now sit within North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust, formed in April 2026 when Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals joined with Bridgewater Community Healthcare. Cheshire has no major trauma centre of its own, so the most seriously injured patients travel to Aintree University Hospital, the designated adult centre for the Cheshire and Mersey Major Trauma Network, while the local hospitals run as trauma units.
Mental health and learning disability care is led by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, with inpatient wards at Bowmere Hospital in Chester, including the Willow psychiatric intensive care unit, and Mulberry Ward, its modern acute inpatient ward in Macclesfield, plus Ancora House for children and young people. The county also holds three prisons, the women’s prison at HMP Styal near Wilmslow, the category C HMP Risley and the open estate at HMP Thorn Cross, both near Warrington, all of which need nursing cover. On the independent side, Spire Regency in Macclesfield and Spire Cheshire in Warrington carry a steady list of elective surgery, and community and district nursing reaches right across the rural stretches between the towns.

Specialisms in Cheshire
Wherever your experience sits, there is likely to be work for you nearby.
Cheshire has a notably older population. In Cheshire East the number of people aged over 75 grew by around 41 per cent between 2011 and 2023, well ahead of the England average, and the borough alone counts dozens of nursing homes offering round the clock care. That keeps demand high for nurses in residential and nursing settings across both Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester, whose adult social care was rated good by the CQC in 2025.

Mental health work here runs through Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which staffs Bowmere Hospital in Chester with its Beech, Juniper and Willow wards, Mulberry Ward in Macclesfield and Ancora House, the trust’s unit for children and young people. A new £3.5 million urgent mental health response centre at the Countess of Chester Health Park is adding to crisis and community roles for mental health nurses across the county.

Cheshire has a real prison estate, so healthcare experience behind the gate is genuinely useful here. HMP Styal near Wilmslow is one of the country’s main women’s prisons, HMP Risley near Warrington is a category C men’s prison and HMP Thorn Cross at Appleton Thorn is an open resettlement prison. All three rely on prison healthcare teams, and secure and forensic experience travels well between them.

Critical care in Cheshire is delivered through the intensive care units at the district general hospitals, at the Countess of Chester, Leighton, Macclesfield and Warrington. For major trauma, patients are taken out of county to Aintree University Hospital, the adult centre for the Cheshire and Mersey Major Trauma Network, with neuro cases going to The Walton Centre and children to Alder Hey, so ITU and HDU nurses stay in steady demand locally.

Theatre and recovery nurses can work the NHS lists at Leighton, Macclesfield, Warrington and Halton in Runcorn, which handles a lot of elective and day case surgery, and add private work at Spire Regency in Macclesfield and Spire Cheshire in Warrington. Scrub, anaesthetics and recovery skills all get used.

Care & support work in Cheshire
Most care across Cheshire is delivered by care assistants and support workers rather than registered nurses. Much of the county is covered by two large unitary councils, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester, both rated Good for adult social care by the CQC in 2025, and the work spans elderly care homes, supported living and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. With an older-than-average population and services stretching from Chester to Crewe, there is regular work near you.
Cheshire East has one of the fastest-ageing populations in the North West: the number of people aged over 75 grew by around 41% between 2011 and 2023, well ahead of the England average of 28%, and over-65s now make up more than a fifth of the borough. That growth sits behind the dozens of residential and nursing homes spread across Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester. Care assistants are the backbone of these homes, supporting older residents with everyday living, personal care and companionship.

Cheshire West and Chester runs its own in-house provider, Vivo Care Choices, whose supported living service gives adults with learning disabilities and autism their own tenancies in Ellesmere Port, Northwich and Winsford. Cheshire East’s own learning disability planning points the same way, towards independence and supported living rather than residential care. For support workers that means steady demand helping the people they support live as independently as possible, in their own homes and out in the community.

Thousands of people are living with dementia across Cheshire West and Chester, and the pressure is set to grow: the number of residents aged 85 and over is projected to roughly double over the next two decades. Dementia care is some of the most valued work in the sector, supporting older residents to live well day to day in the county’s care homes and memory units.

Cheshire has a genuine specialist neuro presence in Sherborne Court Neurological Centre, a 39-bed purpose-built home near Crewe town centre that supports adults with acquired brain injury alongside conditions such as Huntington’s, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. Rehabilitation support workers here help the people they support rebuild skills and independence, work closely related to the complex-care roles that involve tracheostomy, ventilation and enteral feeding also delivered on site.
